I am totally confused. some people say add veggies some say don’t. some say do not start before your labraor is dewormed, some say raw meat is infects her with worms. please help me out
Everybody has a different opinion about the proper diet for a dog & few people agree.
I, for one, do not feed my dogs raw food. There is a risk of salmonella & e.coli poisoning, tapeworms, & it would be easy for dogs to not receive the nutrients that they require.
However, I know that many people choose to feed their dogs the BARF diet & their dogs do well on it. I think that anyone who decides to feed their dog raw food should do a ton of research on what their dog’s dietary needs are.
I read a raw diet book while considering whether or not to switch my dog with stomach problems. I’m not against raw or for it particularly. The reasons I didn’t switch her is because her and my other dog already are protective of their food. With raw meat and bones, this can intensify. Also, it tends to be messy and many people feed their dogs outside or in the garage. In Arizona, where it is 115 during the day and hotter in a garage, that isn’t reasonable. I did start feeding my cats raw beef, chicken and fish with a little parsley thrown in but they hated it. My dogs get Natural Balance LID Lamb and Rice. I agree that high quality kibble is acceptable. I also give the dogs carrots to chew on, sometimes avocado, tomatoes, whatever we’re eating for dinner.
Everyone has opinions. They are like armpits, we all have them.
Anyways you have to figure out what is best for your dog.
I’m not against raw feeding and I’m not against kibble (as long as its a good quality kibble and not that crap you get at wal mart like Purina, Pedigree, Ol Roy ….one of my dogs almost died as a result of those foods so I have a bias…..I have had lots of luck with high quality kibble such as California Naturals and Innova.)
You just have to do your research and figure out what is best. Vet isn’t always the best person to ask because most get funding from the Hills company and they push Science Diet. Science diet, not a totally bad food but not a good food either.
You just have to decide what is best for your dog and no two dogs are the same.
Personally we don’t have the resources for raw and i don’t know enough about it so I stick to a good quality kibble.
Am I against raw….no. I’m very interested in it.
I think its just a matter of opinion and what works best for ever individual dog
Just research research research.
REAL dog people know that raw feeding is the best. Cooking food takes all the nutrients out even for humans.
A lot of kibble is bad, however there are some good brands out there.
Of course kibble is cooked so its not as good as raw for the dog. Veggies are good for them. Some say they don’t need it but if I don’t feed my veggies I find them eating grass for nutrients not to get sick.
Most vets also don’t know that much about nutrition. A lot will recommend food will fillers and byproducts like Iams which also does animal testing.
Actually the vast majority of Vets have had no classes in animal nutrition and know only what the sales rep tells them. Just for the record.
Too many folks tend to be rabid for or against a new idea such as the BARF (raw) diet. Take time to study the various suggestions and decide what you think is best. I personally feed some of both (heresy I know) and my dogs seem happy and healthy.
Here is a good FAQ to read:http://www.rawlearning.com/rawfaq.html
I am for owners making an informed decision that best suits them and their dog’s well being.
The chances of getting pork tapeworms (Taenia solium), beef tapeworms (Taenia saginata), and fish tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium latum) are slight.
everyone is going to have opinions on what is right what is wrong you should discuss this with your dogs vet they are educated on dogs thats why they are dr.’s
