Feeding Raw Chicken Wings?

Hi, I have 3 whippets all aged under 2 yrs, they are fed on dry food, I also include dental biscuits and dental chews. However, their teeth are beginning to discolour and show tartar build up. Will feeding raw chicken wings help their teeth as I have had suggested to me. I am scared of them choking. They will not tolerate a toothbrush, any ideas, please?

Raw bones are fine but never cooked. You might be better off with raw marrow bones from the butcher. Many just give them away or sell them for a low cost. I freeze them first to kill bacteria.

A couple of these answerers have no idea what they’re talking about and should be doing some homework or chores or something. Anyway, raw chicken is fine, bone and all but there’s a slight problem. Feeding raw + Feeding kibble = vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach. It’s better to switch to a raw diet altogether. The chicken wings probably wouldn’t be enough to clean the teeth anyway. I can tell you’ve done a little research into raw feeding but do a little more. I don’t agree with the BARF diet because of it’s extremely high bone content, I feed a diet consisting of 70% muscle meat, 20% organ, and 10% bone. If I were you I’d be feeding chicken backs and lamb necks in the beginning to get the teeth clean because both of those foods are boney but the bones aren’t too dense. Don’t worry about them choking, this is what they’re designed to eat, although some dogs have been taught (by us via feeding them small kibbles) to inhale food. If your dogs try to inhale their food feed them larger portions where they are forced to chew until they catch on. Make sure to feed organ as I’ve already said because they can’t live on meat and bone alone. Also I supplement with salmon oil for the Omega 3 and give a dog vitamin once a week. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me, I’d be happy to help and/or provide you with a sample menu of something I might feed on an average day in my kennel!

You can get a powder to put in their food
Or there is also some stuff in a tube that you just put into their mouth for their teeth
Both from the vets, no need for a consultation just ask the receptionist.
As for chicken bones I read a long report from a vet who had been at the game for years and he said he had never had a dog brought to him with a stuck chicken bone.

Raw chicken wings are great – although bone-heavy. I’d replace a meal or half a meal with the chicken wing so you’re not overfeeding.
The Dogster Raw Forums are a fantastic resource – one of my good friends has an IG and two retired racing Greyhounds, so I’ve seen a lot of sighthounds doing amazingly well on raw!
    Here’s a thread full of good resources:http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_D…
And here’s a link to a downloadable spreadsheet so you’ll know if, say, one chicken wing would be a whole meal or half a meal. http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_D…
    Best of luck!

Chicken to help whiten their teeth? How odd of someone to suggest that. The dry food you are providing them is the best way to keep tartar from building up on their teeth. That, along with good chew toys, should do the trick. From time to time, you may need to take them to the vet for him to anesthetize the dogs for a proper cleaning.

No not really, maybe a whole chicken though. I feed occasionaly chicken wings, raw of course. But as for teeth, it doesn’t really have much chewing to them like say a rib bone or tail bone will really make them working.
Edit: Remember that you cant mix kibbles with raw meat. Feed raw one day and kibbles the next.

Feeding dogs raw chicken is fine, I used to feed my German shepherd on them, and thighs etc, the bones in raw chicken are very soft. However once cooked they become brittle so NEVER feed cooked chicken bones (or any bones) to your dog. But raw are fine, he/she will love you for it!

You know you could get their teeth cleaned up by a vet… also it’s safe. I fed my dogs those skin of the chicken raw and they never choked. Well the dogs ate left-overs sooo……..they ate a lot of raw food dogs dont choke trust me. And they eat bones to to help their teeth,

  9. Maxi says:

A good marrow bone from the butchers.
Of course they will tolerate a tooth brush, buy a finger one, dip in some gravy/marmite and let them lick it, then rub their teeth a couple of times, once they get used to it -Bicarb of soda and rub their teeth

Raw chicken bones are fine. Only cooked bones splinter and dogs have enzymes in their bellys that lets them eat raw meats without getting sick. We give our rotties raw chicken legs and thighs and they love it! Once our boy ate an entire chicken raw. Took him awhile but he was a happy camper while he was dining!!

  11. flannell says:

yes you can use raw chicken, never cooked because thats when the bones become brittle and can break in the stomach. the vet recommended that for my cats but they wont touch them unfortunately (too cossetted i reckon)

  12. boxadorl says:

I feed my dogs raw chicken as the main part of their diet and it is ok for them. I give them a large raw bone once or twice a week for their teeth and this keeps them clean!
    good luck x

  13. Claire A says:

No it will be bad for them. Please don’t ever feed them chicken bones, they splinter in the dogs mouth/throat/stomach

  14. John B says:

    No, chicken bones splinter easy

  15. k.b says:

try rawhide chews my little boy dachshund loves them but keep an eye on them when they have them and when they get too small throw them away and give them new ones.

  18. ladykenm says:

No chicken Bones!! Ask your vet what to use on their teeth. Or you could have the teeth cleaned by a vet that does perform dental cleanings.
