~ When it comes to chicken or beef I don’t worry at all. They seem to chew it so well and I have never had a problem. Pork bones I stay away from but all others are great. Also, make sure you try Tripe…if you are going to start doing this. My dogs love the turkey necks and gizzards. Thanksgiving is my dogs favorite time of year!!!

shuan h – you shouldn’t have fed them cooked whole turkeys. Raw would have prevented your problem.
Anyway, no, I don’t worry about it. We have a tiny dog (5 lbs) and a big dog (92 lbs) and they both get meaty bones.
Just make sure that they are chewing it up and not just gulping their food. Also if you move on to other bones, make sure the bones are not weight-bearing bones. And no pork bones!

no i don’t worry about CHOKING i worry about SPLINTERING. most older dogs don’t choke on bones, but if they chew them and they crack splinters can go in there throat to their dstomache and maybe slit they’e stomach or it may get stuck in the dog’s throat and cut him.splinters can be fatal.

Not really. Once I gave my GSD a pork shoulder and it got wedged in the roof of his mouth. Just watch them. Sometimes they eat very fast.

No because they usually don’t choke on raw bones. It’s cooked bones that splinter.
