I am feeding my dog The Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw The food isn’t really raw but it’s dehydrated so it can still be called raw due to the low temps used.
So I’m wondering… is it ok to add raw meat? or some lightly cooked meat? (the food already has meat in it.) I just want something very healthy for my dog. I do not completely agree with the BARF diet but I do see the logic in feeding raw meat since dogs have eaten that for a long time way before kibble. But I don’t agree with feeding only raw meat and bones and organs. I believe for the best nutrition, a dog would need the vitamins and minerals from veggies and fruits and supplements

You’re right about what you said. It’s not nutritious for dogs to be on only meat, organ, and bone, they do need veggies and fruits like berries.
If you lightly cook the meat then you will still preserve some of the vitamins and minerals left and it would be a good choice to add to THK food. It’s a complete meal in itself so adding the meat will be good. Just don’t cook it at high temps and it will be healthy for your dog. I think raw is better though.
The issue with raw meat is…well it can contain not only dangerous bacteria, but thing like parasite eggs.
You may have heard that dogs used to eat raw meat all the time, but their Immune systems could take it them. Raw meat also allowed for natural section. Meaning that 8 pups in a litter, might not all survive til adulthood. In the past many dogs have died from food poisoning.
It’s the same thing for people: we used to eat raw meat. But we cook it now for a reason.
Personally I wouldn’t risk My dog’s health. I’d cook the meat completely. I don’t even recommend rare-cooked meat for people either.
Raw veggies, are ok, but dogs eat them seldonly. Their digestive tracts are different, please remember this. They should eat mostly meat.
This isn’t a challenge, I just don’t recommend it.
Dogs thrive on raw meat so adding this to the dehydrated food will probably make it more attractive to your dog. Dogs have digestive tracts that are very short and very tolerant of bacteria that would make people sick so there’s no need to cook the meat. From a nutritional standpoint, raw meat is very good for dogs, provided you augment it with either other animal parts or nutritional supplements. There are specially formulated dog vitamins and supplements you can buy, but if you’re combining a quality packaged food with raw food, there’s really no need for it. Dogs often enjoy a bit of veggies with their food, but if you think about their “ancestral” diet, dogs and their ancestors, wolves, didn’t eat veggies or fruit, only animal parts. An important part of this natural diet though is other animal parts, such as the heart, liver and bone marrow which will round out the nutritional requirements.
