I have an 11 months old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Since September of 2008, she has been on a raw, prey model diet. She has absolutely thrived on this diet.
Lately though, she has been refusing her raw food. She is getting bored with the raw. I gave in. I am worried about her getting what she needs in a diet, and I know I can’t be exact with bone/meat/organs ratios. So, today, we bought her some Wellness canned food and a small bag of Wellness Core. We were thinking of feeding her both.
My questions: Does anyone feed a high quality kibble and canned food along with their raw? How should I go about feeding it? When I do feed raw, should I still follow the prey model? I know I shouldn’t feed both in the same meal, but I was thinking of feeding raw in the morning, and Wellness at night. Does that sound right?
I feel like I’m giving up, but I know I can’t provide everything she needs with the prey model diet alone. Thanks!
Hi, I feed Orijen kibble in the morning, or occasionally I cook a meal like fish and potato or beef and kidneys as a substitute meal for a change.
In the evening I feed raw chicken wings, rabbit, or lamb ribs or necks.
Mine do really well on this, and are always keen to eat- previously I have found them to be faddy and picky.
Good luck with the change, sounds like a healthy, good quality diet.
I don’t think your giving up.The fact that you bought a great food for your dog shows your care. Why not give her the raw a few times a week in between meals and feed her a little less of the Wellness on thise days..I cook for my dogs besides Halo dry.I make up a huge stew and they get this mixed in with the dry and they love it..
ask a vet.
My mom feeds raw, and has done a lot of research on the topic. It is not a good idea to feed kibble with meat and bones because of the different amount of time it takes for it to digest, causing digestive problems. Raw food is a great diet! Here are a variety of things you can feed her to mix things up. I dont think you need to follow the prey model, there are others ways of feeding raw which wont be too much for you to handle and will keep here interested.
ground turkey
turkey necks
chicken backs
veggies, beans
yougurt
eggs
tripe
salmon or mackerel fish
Good luck!
When you’re feeding raw, are you changing the main course (meat option:beef, chicken, turkey, pork, etc.) up? Also, If you can’t be exact or really close with the meat, bone, supplement ratio then you should just give your dog a recreational raw bone every now and then. It’s not really good for your dogs digestive system to go back and forth from raw to kibble food. Stick with one or the other and if you need to make a switch, do it gradually.
All my dogs were on a raw diet, but it got too expensive and time comsuming for us, once our Saint Bernard got bigger. We feed our dog Innova EVO natural dog food (the red meat bites), and all our dogs love it.
This site helped me with everything dog related, from diet to training: http://www.leerburg.com they even sell a natural dehydrated food and give examples of how to give the proper proportions.
I think that is a good idea. Some Dogs tend to get tired of their food easily, the picky ones do at least. LOL, mine did.
You could feed raw in the morning, and then Wellness at night. OR you could feed mostly raw in the morning with just a little bit of Wellness mixed in and mostly Wellness at night with just a little bit of raw mixed in. That would make the taste a little more interesting to her. Also, there is no harm in just a little bit of peanut butter in her food once in a while and mixing it around. It is a yummy treat, but it also is not bad for her.
Good luck, maybe try asking your vet about this also. Any questions, please email me at..
