My dog was nine years old when I stopped feeding him commercial dog food. Until that time I was spending enormous amounts of money on vet bills every year. Since I changed to a raw diet with no commercial dog food he hasn’t been to the vet. His dry eye (supposedly incurable and costly to treat) is now non-existent.
Best thing I ever did was change his diet. I followed Dr Ian Billinghurst’s evolutionary diet (Bones and Raw Food) and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. http://www.drianbillinghurst.com/
My dog is now almost 14, has no more skin allergies, no more dry eye, is happy and healthier than he’s ever been. That’s all the facts I need.
Thanks, Kim, for the great links and resources! I have three dogs that I fed raw for four mos and they did great. It wasn’t so convenient for me to make the food up ahead of time because of limited freezer space and large dogs and I confess I feed a kibble with no wheat, corn or soy or rice protein concentrate. I feed occasional raw, but I have one dog that had pancreatitis twice before feeding raw. I would grind her raw meaty bones since she is a gulper. She never got sick from it and didn’t even need to do a gradual switch over to raw. I recommend a raw diet, I’d do it for my own if I could, and these sites are GREAT.
Great article!
Raw foods for pets was never a good idea on so many levels. I honestly think it was thought up by someone to make some money and get their 15 minutes of fame.
People love to follow the “experts” – look how many human diets there are – Atkins, Zone, South Beach, High Carb/Low Fat, High Protein/Low Carb, etc, etc.
The media does our thinking for us because it is easier to be spoon-fed our opinions rather than investigate these things for ourselves.
