I feed my 4 month old puppy raw food, but I’m constantly running into problems. So far nobody knows how to help me and I would greatly appreciate it if you could. I use a lot of variety (different meats, 10% organs, 10% bone, 80 % muscle, plus veggies and egg) ,
and with the veggies, I do not need to grind them because he will eat everything. My problem is his poop.
Some times it’s normal and sometimes it’s diarrhea. I’m getting worried, because I’ve tried every combination
possible to make sure he is not allergic to a certain type of meat or maybe eggs, but I’ve had no luck.
Meaning that if I try feeding beef, one day he’ll be fine and the next he’ll have runny poop again. He is not
too skinny and he has a huge apetite as always. Sometimes he vomits, and he always chews on grass when he goes
outside. Stopping the grass eating did not help. I do not want to use dry food because I know that raw is the
most healthy and natural for a dog. I’m desperate for help and I would greatly appreciate some.
It’s the veggies. Dogs cannot properly digest vegetable material. Try either cutting the vegetables out completely(he doesn’t really need them anyway) or puree them. Also check out the raw forums on Dogster.com, there are lots of people on their to help you! I also feed my dogs (including two 4 month old puppies) raw without any problems. For what its worth, I feed NO vegetable matter. Try cutting the veggies out and see what happens.
Sounds like your dog has pancreatitus, take your dog to the vet asap.
Wow, you do need help.
OK, I don’t know what you’ve read but your very confused. I’m going to cut the crap and make it VERY simple for you.
1. Your dog doesn’t need vegetables. It’s pointless to give it. All your dog needs is 80% Raw Meaty Bones, 10% meat (not mince) and 10% offal at least half being liver. Once a week give whole egg with shell and whole fish.
2. Don’t start with beef, it’s the number one raw meat that dogs have problems with. You start with poultry, then fish, then goat, then sheep, then pork, then beef. And you introduce each one slowly.
3. Your RMB’s need to be appropriately sized, you’ve got a large breed dog if you give it a chicken neck it’ll choke, but a chicken thigh/wing/frame would be appropriate.
4. You only need to feed 2% to 3% of body weight, just estimate and if your dog gobbles it down REALLY quickly you’re not feeding it enough but if it takes it all day to eat you’re feeding it too much.
Simple yeah?
Did you very very slowly introduce new foods one at a time? Sounds like that may be your problem. Go back to the beginnning- feed just chicken for a week. No problems? Add in a new food for a week. Repeat. When raw feeders feed veggies, they are ground not because the dogs won’t eat them whole but because they get NO nutitional value from them if they aren’t pureed (and most raw feeders don’t even give veggies, they aren’t really necessary).
Ok i know alot of people are on this raw kick. But raw isn’t for every dog out there so maybe you should find a dry dog food and keep him from being sick. I would suggest natural balance limited ingredient diet. It is designed to start from scratch and build up a dogs immune system. you really need to stop before you make him way worse. Take a look at this websitehttp://www.dogchannel.com/dog-nutrition/…http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/
Hmmm…sounds like too much variety. I’d cut everything out except chicken. Feed only that for at least 2 or 3 weeks, then *slowly* add another meat. Your pup may be allergic to some meats & the only way to tell is to try 1 at a time for a couple/few weeks. Resist the temptation to add other things- you’ll never find out what the issue is unless you simplify his diet. I know it’s time consuming but it’ll be worth it in the end. There’s a raw feeding group on Yahoo- there’s tons of info there: raw feeding@yahoo.com. Very busy, informative group. HTH
1 – If you’re not going to grind the veggies, don’t even bother giving them to him. The point of grinding is not to get the dog to eat them, it’s because dog’s can’t digest whole veggies.
2 – What’s your organ meat? High amounts of liver will cause diarrhea and need to be gradually introduced.
3 – High bone content will help firm up stool. If I get soft stool, I usually do a couple meals with lots of chicken wings or something bony and it helps a lot.
4 – Don’t switch around on meat sources. Just stick to one until you have things worked out, then gradually introduce new ones – one at a time.
Add: I would def. try chicken first. Pork does not agree with my dog at all. (some dogs do fine on it, though) Pork is probably a bad first meat.
I appreciate the fact that you believe that you are doing the best thing for your pup; but your not. To give a 4 month puppy raw food is a little dangerous. It could have parasites it it that will cause a lot of problems and possibly kill your dog. If you’re going to give your pup meat; cook it. A variety of meat is not good either. Find one and stick with it. The same goes for dried dog food. If you feed it dry food for a week and change the brand the next week, you will cause diahrrea in your animal. The same holds for other foods. A quick remedy for immediate solution, add some cooked rice to some cooked ground beef and that will soothe the stomach. Never give your dog bones unless it is a cow femor that it can’t break open and get the chards of bone in it’s throat.
I know your intentions are good, but your doing your pup more harm than good.
Ok, so you have got the balance about right, I would personally not give too many different mixtures until his tummy is more settled, nor give more than 2 eggs a week and would add a garlic pearl and x2 brewers yeast tablets daily this will help to improve his immune system.
Keep it simple, chicken wings, legs, neck, chopped veg, a little fruit maybe once a week an egg mixed with some boiled rice to give some bulk and roughage, a large fresh beef bone to chew every other week.
I feed BARF and raw, chicken on bone, minced tripe, beef, raw veg, fruit like pieces of banana, apple/pears (no pips) and my dogs will pick blackberries, strawberries and raspberries themselves fresh oily fish/tinned tuna/sardines and boiled rice (is good for upset tummies) and I also use lots of herbs for immune system building and to stop me having to spray insecticide for ticks and fleas or chemical wormers. I also don’t give more than one organ meat like liver once per week and always cooked….and this is normally used as garlic liver treats not intheir meal.
Herbs such as finely chopped dandelions, these are edible plants, also known as Taraxacum Officinale, often used as a detox for the blood….
I have been feeding like this for years never had fleas/ticks or worms, however their immune system is important ( it s for evey dog and kibble fed dogs are often the ones who have the most problems with allergies, illness, infections etc)
Disregard what Charlotte C said!!! She is giving wrong info. You can start a puppy on raw as soon as it’s done nursing milk from bitch. If there is diarrhea issues only feed chicken(completely raw)for a week or so. This will stop the problems. If problem persists take canine to vet, there is something wrong. If your vet tries to blame the raw feeding find a new one.
