How Do You Keep The House And Feeding Area Safe And Clean When Feeding Raw?

also, how do you manage if your dog has a long coat, or is small (and a really really really messy eater)?
And how do you make sure the meat is as cruelty free as possible? For example, can you give them stuff that would otherwise be thrown away? I’m vegan so that’s a major concern for me.
I’m not too serious about feeding raw atm because I don’t know if it would even be possible for us. But if it is, then I’d love to research more about it.

As far as feeding, we do ours on a towel (we have several). Any organs that I don’t want to feed on the towel, we feed in her food bowl.
You can always tie the hair up. I have a dog with a beard, so we do a beard wipe down on messy nights.
Some meats can be a little past expiration. If its bad my dog won’t eat it. Remember their stomachs are not like outs.
Cruelty free/free range and the like, I was trying to find a site, but they are actually starting to mark those meats at the grocer, so hopefully in your area they should be somewhat easier to find. Or you could find your source close to home (I live in a rural area, so loads of farmers/hunters here, and I know the living conditions).
    to your edit-
flies won’t bother the dog. ;)
and ethics are a good thing! Isn’t it ethical to want to feed your dog a biologically appropriate diet, so that would mean meats. I’m not a huge meat eater myself, so I can appreciate your concern, it can be done.

I still use a dish for some of my dogs feeds (depending) or feed them on a surface I can just wash off. It doesn’t usually hang around long enough to get flies on etc.
I also buy mostly organic from an organic farm shop. They have the contract for quantas airline (out of Heathrow) and so they have lots of chicken carcass, feet and wing tips left which they mince down for dog owners. I also buy other organic meat there but only the cheap offcuts.

    >Feed outside. Simple. My dog won’t even eat indoors.

    >Get over it.

Your best bet join Yahoo’s raw feeding and raw chat there are several vegetarians and vegans on the list who feed raw and can be of help to you.http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RawCh…http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Rawfe…
ETA: can’t feed outside in summer – we get flies – won’t be there long enough for the flies to be a issue and there are flies EVERYWHERE
and we live in the city so the garden is small. > Not a valid excuse
Plus my cat would eat it. > Cats are carnivores. Raw isn’t going to hurt it.
And fine if you don’t want to eat outside go out and buy towels or a sheet that will be strictly for feeding the dog on. Lay that down and then a large plastic place mat. let the dog eat on that. If the dog moves take the food back to the place. they will get the point that they cannot wander with their food.
As for cruelty free – I know plenty of vegan raw feeders who just go the grocery store and get what is there. Raw is only as expensive as you make it and sometimes you have to make the choice between feeding you animals well and going broke doing it.
I would assume you’d want free range and grass fed, if you don’t live any place that has a farming community, or having any grocery stores that have a variety of meats at low cost, that means ordering online which almost means having to buy 20-40lbs of meat at one time to save on shipping costs. That also means having to possibly buy another freezer to keep all that meat

  5. Dot says:

Dogs are fed outside and clean themselves.
Cutting board is glass and washed in soapy water.
Never worried about the cruelty, I eat meat too.
My dogs eat it all straight away, nothing left within 2 minutes.

  6. Inna says:

After preparation, wash everything down with bleach.

  7. Happy Turkey Day! says:

I gate my dog into the kitchen, he eats on the linoleum floor, and then I clean the floor when he’s done eating
you could find local farmers who raise animals for meat, and buy from them.. at least then you know where the meat is coming from and how its raised.. some smaller farmers only butcher a few times a year.. you might be able to buy “half a beef” or something and freeze it.
Yes dogs can have stuff that would otherwise be thrown away.. as long as the meat is not spoiled, moldy, rotting, or diseased.
