Yes Another Raw Feeding Question!? :)?

Is it possible to see a difference in a raw fed dog on day 2? Athena looks happier and doesn’t gourge her self on raw food. She was very thin 2 days ago when being fed kibble. now she looks fuller in her back and butt. I am crazy? is a half a chicken enough food for her once a day or should i give her a whole chicken one half in the morning and the other in the evening? they are probably 5 pound chickens. thanks! PLZ EXCUSE ALL MY RAW QUESTIONS I JUST LIKE TO KNOW EVERYTHING LOL! :)

5 pounds of chicken is way too much unless she’s a Mastiff or St. Bernard! My 90 pound males only get 2.5 or so pounds of meat a day! Just make sure you feed organ meats and not just muscle meat. If the whole chickens came with a bag of innards inside, feed her that as well, it contains vitamins and minerals muscle flesh does not. Also stop by walmart and buy a container of chicken liver, some chicken gizzards, and some chicken/beef hearts. They’re cheap, they’re nutritious, and like I said before, they’re a necessity. Good luck and keep up with the good work!
-edit- I’d also like to say I feed 3 times a day. If you have larger breeds and feed only once a day you’re dancing with the Devil….well maybe not the Devil but you’re flirting with BLOAT. 2 times a day minimum for large/deep chested breeds. Don’t exercise for an hour or two before or after feeding as well. My “lunches” are the smallest meals because I work my dogs about an hour after their lunch.

You may see a difference right away. The weight may just be wishful thinking, you should weight her to see if she is gaining weight.
The amount to feed depends on the dogs weight. You should feed 2-3% of the body weight. As you dog may need to gain a bit, go for 3%, maybe a but more if she is very active. As you have not give her current weight, I cannot say if you are feeding enough.
You should also give other meats like beef, lamb or pork (not all dogs do well on pork). You can stick with just chicken for now, but introduce other meats as she gets used to raw and different meats.
I prefer to feed 2 meals a day. I do have smaller dogs and they can’t handle large meals or just one meal. If you were feeding one meal before, keep doing that. Continue the feeding schedule you were on before and adjust if needed.

Good for you – yes she probably already looks much happier.
Take a look at this web site – there is lots of information that will help and a lot of questions that can be answered. Well done for giving your dog this new lease of life !

Once a day is good don’t feed twice a day because half a stomach full is hungrier than an empty stomach. You could be seeing improvements she probably feels much better and is happier.

I don’t feed raw, but I do feed fresh, and I think 2x a day is better. Our dogs used to eat grass and barf when their stomach was really empty.

Oh, yes, very possible. Tiger was WAY better on his second day too.

  8. ξBindi§ says:

How much does she weigh? You want to feed 2-3% of her body weight daily.
If she needs to gain weight, don’t try to push it on her fast, that isn’t healthy. If she’s underweight you need to pick an ideal weight and feed 2-3% of that body weight. For example when Bindi started raw and was skin bones at 42 pounds, I fed her like she was 50 pounds. It did take time, but now she’s a well muscled 53 pounds and looks great.
ETA: You’ll see results with raw. Bindi was the same way, always found healthy but underweight, turd just wouldn’t eat. I started seeing good things right away, but it did take a few months for her to get a good weight. June 7th when we started raw Bindi weighed 42 pounds, Aug. 7 she weighed 45, by Oct. 21st she was up to 53 pounds.

When I first started raw feeding I was amazed at how much less voracious my food thief was. It was as if I’d FINALLY satisfied her to the point where she didn’t feel like she was starving.
Generally, I feed once a day… about 2% of the dogs GOAL weight (what you think the dog should weigh).. but some dogs need the meal split into 2 feedings to avoid dumping syndrome (too large a meal leading to diarrhea).
My 115 lb Bernese eats around 2 lbs a day… I cannot imagine how big a dog would have to be to eat 5 lbs a day!!! *IF* I fed him 5 lbs at once I would be concerned about bloat… or illness caused by inability to digest faster than bacteria grow.
Edit: When I need a dog to gain weight I feed twice a day and I make sure to add extra fat.
