my little dog loves her raw, she’ll go through anything. my 55 lb dog though, i have to cut EVERYTHING up in little pieces, or he just licks and spits it out. he’s not getting enough bone (he won’t eat egg shells) what should i do? just let him get hungry enough to bite into it? his teeth are healthy he’s just under 1 yr old, but he acts like he can’t chew. he’ll go through bully sticks and pig feet in 5 minutes though so i know he can chew. he doesn’t care when i break the bones either and show him the marrow. what can i give him to replace the bone he’s not eating? thanks.
Oh I feel ya… One of my girls gets very picky about her raw too!
_How’s your guy doing with his offal??
As far as the sweet potatos go – mine get them too. Usually when I do an Offal meal. Sometimes it’s a little too rich for them without it. Tonight my guys had chicken liver, beef intestines, couple tablespoons of yogurt, veggie mash (spinach, green beans, SWEET POTATO! blue berries, apple, peas, and squash) a little bit of brown rice (only get grains rarely) A few table spoons of apple cider vinegar, probitoics, chlorophyll (My guys get bad liver breath
) A bit of missing link and I did add some bone meal today As they haven’t had much bone at all this week… I ate nachos *shakes head*
First what kind of meat are you offering? You might want to try something else for a while until he gets “into it”
As for making up the lost nutrients..
How are you feeding the eggshell?
It’s hard to digest whole – ideally it should be ground up into a powder and fed that way (easy to do – just let them dry a bit and throw them in a coffee grinder)
You could also try a bone meal – solid gold makes one, you should be able to find it where the sell the food.
Of course you could also bite the bullet and buy a meat grinder..
ETA: Beef is well like by my guys – def their favorite. My girl who gets picky will not refuse a beef rib! offering a differnet type of meat is prob gong to be you best bet. I Just up the probiotics a little when intoducing a new meat source. Never had a problem. If you’re worried about it causing and upset tummy trim off all the fat and a fair bit of the meat. It’s just a trick of finding the raw meat your guy likes best. Once he’s eating that well I’m willing to bet he’s far more receptive to other kinds
It took some work for my guys to get used to the green tripe.. Chicken livers are well liked though
Raw diets are good, only if the dog eats it.
You can cook chicken and it will still have most of the nutrients in it that your dog needs. You can also feed the one dog a holistic brand kibble. Wellness is my personal favorite. You could feed them half the suggested amount of kibble, and then supplement with raw foods so they get the vitamins and minerals of the kibble as well as the benefits of raw diets.
The latest Whole Dog Journal has an article on veterinary dentistry that might make you re-think the bone thing … they cause lots of damage to teeth when the dogs chew hard on them. This vet says that hard chewing doesn’t keep the teeth clean and is generally not needed. (WDJ is NOT your typical “feen them commerical kibble” type of writing – it’s holistic.)
I feed cooked after lots of research. I supplement with bone meal.
try not cutting things up anymore if u keep doing it the dog willl come to expect it
Get some of his old kibble and mix it into the cut up raw. Just for a little while until it “clicks” that the raw is, indeed, food.
He could be having “meal confusion” if he was raised on kibble.
NO it won’t clog him up or cause any other health problems. Sort of like the way you can eat raw and cooked vegetables in the same meal with no problems.
Raw is an all or nothing thing. If you’re going to cook the meat, you may as well feed kibble.
They do make dog vitamins. Both in tablet form and in powders. If you don’t think he’s getting all he needs, find a good one and offer that. Ark Naturals puts out a good one and “Pet Tabs” is tried and true.
Good luck
What part of the chicken is he getting? You might want to try bone-in breasts, or game hens. There easier to chew, that might help get him started.
He’s probably just a bit confused by the whole thing since it sounds like he was kibble fed for a year. He’s probably had chewies his whole life though, so he knows what to do with those.
You could also try some whole ground chicken, this includes bones, just ground up with the meat. Of course keep trying to get him to eat the RMB’s so he gets the dental benefits.
You could also try sprinkling his food with Brewer’s Yeast. I’m not sure why since that stuff tastes like cardboard, but I knew a dog who’d eat a tin can if you put that stuff on it. I had to sprinkle some on every piece of chicken, or he wouldn’t eat it.
I’ve been raw feeding for almost 6 yrs., neither one of my dogs will eat egg shells, they do eat plenty of bones though so it’s not a problem. Try chicken necks and chicken wings, they are softer and easier to chew. Some people dry the egg shells and grind them up in a coffee bean grinder. Also, try feeding ground chicken or turkey, most stores sell it in 1lb. rolls and add chopped chicken necks gradually. Good Luck.
Not all dogs know what to do with meat. Try using some ground meat for a few meals to get him used to eating it and the taste. Also try some chicken breast with the bone in it. Smaller raw bones are better for the dogs. Bones are not really for cleaning teeth, that is what the meat does. Some people use bone meal instead on raw bones.
You could also try some pre-made diets for a bit. Most have bones in them
I alternate between raw and cooking the food. That’s not a problem. I just find it strange how your one dog is acting. I cut it up, but my dog’s don’t care. I just cannot imagine a dog not being excited over raw feed.
To give my dogs bones and marrow, I buy the 10# bag of Gold Leaf Chicken quarters from Walmart for about $5. Sometimes I cut the meat off the bones and weigh that out for the meal and then use the bones for a treat after meals. Chicken bones are great when given RAW ONLY!
When I have cow’s tongue, I like to crock pot 2-3 and add a cup of rice, and maybe a can of spinach. My dogs are 56#, 86# and 105# and a 5gal crock pot feeds them 3-4 meals.
If I feed them heart, I cut it and feed it raw.
If I feed beef, I sometimes cut it and feed it raw, and other times, feed it cooked (and cooled, of course), with the rice and spinach added.
Give him chicken bones… That should do just fine for the marrow and both your dogs should love that -!-
