I switched my dogs over to raw on Tuesday and all has seemed to go well. No choking, all have passed bowel movements and no dog fights for the others’ food. Thank goodness. Lol.
I still have a few random questions that I would like some help with. First off, I feed twice a day with the larger portion being in the evening. Should I feed once a day as it mimics the wild more and possibly better for them or stay with a little something for breakfast? Second, I was going to fast them tomorrow as I read it is best for their system. I planned on giving two of the dogs a half a chicken today as it is extra than what is their daily amount to make up for the fasting day. The other getting extra thighs and such.
So I guess my question here is… is fasting a good idea? Two are older in age – 9yo. And one is at the proper weight but she is a naturally very slender dog.
So is it safe for them to miss a meal if getting more the night before and a little extra after? And I was wondering when to start giving a raw egg a week and if it could be given on the fasting day to have a little something for them? Or is the whole point of fasting to have the system have a day to reboot with no digesting?
And last… when is it good to start a new meat? When to start slowly incorporating organs into their diet?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
This all sounds good to me.
However I would take it all nice and slow. Maybe don’t fast them this week but let them have a little time for their system to adjust, and there is quite a lot of adjusting to do.
You do not have to give extra the day before a fast though, and yes the whole idea is to cleanse the system.
Best just keep checking poops and as long as it is fine, then introduce the 2nd meat after about a week, and a little bit of organ meat. Start with slithers and build from there.
I do give raw eggs and have never had any effect, but they are quite rich so don’t introduce at the same time as a new meat.
All of this is on the cautious side though as most dogs will just get back to what nature intended quite easily. You will find their body shape changes, for the better, although they sometimes look leaner to start with but with more muscle tone. The coat also can change and sometimes (only sometimes) people report a smelly coat for a few weeks. Most put this down to a natural detox.
Please do post questions if required.
Well done and best of luck.
