I try to give my German shepherd dog left over veggies as often as can but he just eats around them. I want to put him on a raw diet but wonder if his health and wellbeing will suffer if he only has the raw meat. (convenience and budget mean i have to buy the pre-packed types).
I notice there are a lot of supplements he could have but are all these necessary.
It depends on which model you do – BARF or prey-model.
Here’s a list of myths associated with raw feeding: http://www.rawfed.com/myths/
There are also a lot of Yahoo! Groups you can join and ask questions about raw feeding – in fact, some are probably already answered!
Dogs are carnivores – not STRICT carnivores, but carnivores nonetheless. They do fine on just raw meat, bones, and organs.
I have been feeding Raw for 18 months now. It’s so worth it.
My dogs LOVE it, they are healthier, and their poops are so different…
I feed Bravo raw… on their website you can see what supplements they recommend.
good luck.
Your dog will do fine on a raw diet. Supplements are not necessary as long as he has a balanced, varied diet. If you chop upraw veg in a food processor, mix it with his food and you’ll probably find he’ll eat it with no problem.
Search on Google for BARF and you’ll find plenty of information
First thing, DO NOT listen to the people who tell you this is a bad idea. Wild dogs don’t start a campfire to cook their meat and they certainly don’t do gourmet.
There is an LJ group dedicated to feeding raw and nuitritional to animals. Join up and see how you go.http://community.livejournal.com/rawdogs…
They also have lots of links of interest.
BTW – I feed my cats semi raw and the change has been amazing. No stinky craps and bad breath and their teeth and fur look great.

Mind if you are going to feed a raw diet , I dont suggest lots of beef , I feed my dogs chicken , along with blended vegetables , aswell as other foods such as raw tuna and the yoke of eggs…
Problem is that a lot of the convenience and budget raw meat from the pet shop has been treated, sterilised and/or bleached, and there is absolutely no goodness in it whatsoever.
You would be better off asking your own butcher for offcuts, my butcher throws all his offuts into bags, and sells them for 50p. There is very little fat on it, and at least you know it is fit for human consumption, and has not been treated. Some butchers may even give it you free as I believe they have to pay to have it taken away.
If she doesnt like vegetables, you should try cooking them and feeding them with the raw meat.
Although I have to say, I am not a raw meat person, and prefer to cook everything I give my dogs due to digestive problems they have when fed raw.
You can get many books on feeding a raw diet to your dog
I would reccomend throughly researching first as it may not suit your lifestyle
Most dogs will adapt over time – remember that they have different needs to us and some vegetables are not suitable.
I would reccomend sticking with a standard dog food and mix in table scraps and cooked meat every so often – may dogs will eat veg with a little bit of gravy on them!
you never need to give raw meat to the following breeds German Shepherds, pit bulls, rottwielers, and doberman pinchers it will cause aggression
