My dog has often come inside from our backyard smelling like raw meat, and on a few occasions had blood on her fur. Today she came back inside smelling like fish. There is a shop next door that also has a butcher area in the back, and my mother and I both think they are feeding her their scraps/garbage. I’ll be putting up a sign and hopefully my mom will go talk to them. If they continue to do this, can we report them? It seems unsanitary and unsafe because I don’t know where their meat comes from or how old it is. If you have any other suggestions please let me know! Thanks ![]()

Raw salmon could kill your dog. If they’re feeding her bones; that too could be harmful. I think you need to politely tell the shop owner that your dog is on a special diet and that you would appreciate it if they would not feed her without your knowledge. They probably think they’re giving her a special treat. If they don’t stop; explain that they will be liable for any vet bills due to illness caused by their negligence. Hopefully, it won’t come to that. Good luck.
maybe theres a way you can block the fence off. or if you or your mums not around keep the dog in a area
or just hang around and creep in a bush until you see them doing it and tell them off.. haha
i guess you can report them and they could get a good ol talking to?
Some people have no consideration! I totally understand your concerns, and I would be freaked out if someone was feeding my dogs scraps of who-knows-what behind my back! Post a sign, try talking to them, even rig up a web camera or something to see exactly what’s going on. If all else fails…. you could always leave your dog’s poop on their doorstep as a ‘thank-you!’
I can understand your concern over someone feeding your dog but instead of banning these foods altogether, maybe ask if maybe they could bag up the scraps for you instead. Just explain that you are worried about the pup getting too fat if it gets too many treats. This way they can feel they are treating the dog, you know how much he is eating and he gets great food! You have a great source of the best you you could give your dog right next door!!
As others have said, this is what dogs have been eating forever – they are biologically set up to eat these foods.
BTW – when feeding raw the general guide is to feed between 2 and 3% of the dog’s ADULT body weight each day. My dogs get 2.5% on average. The adult dog is about 17-18 kg so I work it out as 17500 grams x 0.025 = 437 grams. Using this as a rough guide I feed between 400 and 500 grams of food. Pups get the same amount of food as an adult dog – just over a few meals rather than one.
**also make sure you check your fences before you do this – some dogs are like Houdini when it comes to getting out of their yards. It would be pretty embarrassing to go and talk to them if the dog is getting out, raiding their bins and coming home again. Our last dog used to jump the fence, go and play soccer at the school and then come home again before we got home from work. We only found out when we were walking her one night and one of the local kids ran up to pat the ’soccer dog’. She told us that Darcy used to come and play every lunch time and then leave again.
Talking to the shop owner would be the best idea. First though, make sure you go outside to inspect the fence. Perhaps your dog is able to get out of the yard and is helping herself to their garbage bin. If she’s secure inside the fence though, then just simply speak with the owner. Let them know that you appreciate the thought, but its really not something you are comfortable with.
In all honesty though, dogs have been eating raw meat since the dawn of time. The fact that its raw won’t hurt her. If its spoiled or just the fatty parts, that may cause problems and should obviously be stopped, but if they are willing to offer her decent raw meat for free….. take them up on the offer. The raw food diet is very “in” right now. Its incredibly healthy for your pet and since you potentially have meat supply for free, it’d be much much cheaper than any dog food you are purchasing.
Have you tried going out there with your puppy and seeing what happens? I hope she’s not a young pup, as if she is, she shouldn’t be out there by herself. Sounds like your puppy knows where the good stuff is coming from. You don’t need to worry about if the meat is old. Dogs have much stronger bacteria in their stomachs to digest raw meats and not get sick. Instead of putting a sign up, I would have your mom go and talk to them. Who knows, you just might realize how much better your dog does on raw foods, and buy some meat from the butcher yourself!
The only thing I would be really worried about is if these people are actually poisoning the meat. If your puppy has been acting strange lately, I would take her to the vet. Just in case.
