Feeding Canines Raw Meat…?

Is it even safe to feed dogs raw meat? can’t they contract a foodborne illness like salmonella or e.coli?
We rescured a wolf hybrid puppy last week and they suggested that we stick to a raw food diet including raw meat.
I am just a bit concerned about the foodborne illness aspect.
(We already feed our dogs Eagle Pack)

Your concerns are valid. Most raw feeders know the butcher where they get their meat and handle it with the utmost care and storage regulations. This is also the reason a lot of vets cringe at a raw food diet.
Having said that, dogs do beautifully on a raw diet …. if the meat is handled correctly and balanced with the proper vegetables.

I was told (by a GSD breeder and an animal rescue and vet) that a little bit of raw meat (beef preferably) is ok and actually good for them. But not to give them too much and make sure it isn’t the bloody raw, freshly killed type. Then thye could get a taste for blood, but a little bit of hamburger meet or the fatty part you cut off the steak before you cook it is completely ok for them. Now since yours is part wolf it may need the real raw meat. That is what one of his parents ate every day so he may need it. Your vet would be able to tell you whats best but I think he will say to mix the meat and the dog food.

Dogs have tougher stomachs than us, wolves even tougher since they aren’t domesticated, and you just have to learn about how to properly prevent these things. Do lots and lots of research to make sure it is balanced properly, but many people think it is the best thing to feed a dog let alone part wild animals
And it is a valid concern- tougher does not mean immune. Just do your reasearch first and if you decide it fits your needs then be careful.

Absolutely safe if done right. If you do it right, the chances of them falling ill are very slim. Dogs are carnivores (don’t fall for that omnivore crap, they don’t need veggies or grains at all!), their digestive tract is shorter than ours and is built to deal with things like salmonella and e.coli much more so than ours is.
There are two raw feeding methods I know of:
BARF: Includes feeding raw, ground meat as well as veggies and grains.
Raw Prey Model: Involves feeding entire raw prey items (such as an entire rabbit or chicken) and does not include veggies or grains.
I personally prefer Raw Prey Model as it is more natural/closer to the natural diet. The benefit of having the bones and whole meat in there is that they are /excellent/ at keeping a dog’s teeth clean, whereas BARF’s meat is ground and doesn’t help much with teeth cleaning. (Yes, raw bones can be fed just fine, it’s /cooked/ bones you want to avoid at all costs.) I also like that it doesn’t include veggies and grains as part of the main diet, as I see them as unnecessary for a carnivorous animal.

No, I have been there, done that…. some people rave about a raw diet… and it is NOT worth it. Its expensive, annoying, risk of disease and not much better for the dog. Just feed a good quality kibble and your dog will be fine…. dont buy into the raw food B.S.
Feeding a raw diet is NOT for a beginner anyways… you need to know specifically what vitamins to supplement with, eggs, yogurt, etc and its very complicated. If you miss one little aspect, you could give your dog serious health problems. Dont bother with it…. just buy the Eagle Pack :)

Dont listen to all these idiots saying dont go raw. I feed my pitbull Raw chicken Carcus,ox or sheep heart, liver or kidney plus some veges. i cut it all up so its in small pieces and feed all of it together. I add in some red meat once a week to with an egg every 3 days. I give him 2 cups full every day at dinner. The raw food diet makes it so he never smells and is very very lean and muscular. His coat is very shinney and smooth. I walk and run him everyday. hes prob %5 body fat or under. Go raw food! i spend $20nz a week on food so thats even cheaper for you guys in America.

Some people like the ideal of RAW feeding and have the time and have the time to make sure it contains no bacteria. But they can never be sure. Some people like the ideal and some don’t. I like the ideal but i don’t have the time to do it. So i feed dry kibble that’s High Quality. I feed “Taste of the Wild”.
If you like the Ideal of RAW feeding but don’t have the time for it or you worried that your dog will get some kind of illness on the RAW feeding diet, they do make dry kibble that matches RAW feeding. If you like the idea of feeding raw, but prefer a gently cooked food that provides benefits that match raw, frozen or home prepared high-meat pet diets then here are some dry kibble dog foods that match and provides the same benefits as RAW Here are some:::

Dogs are built to digest raw meat so I think its ok but I have had the same concerns so I stay away from meat with questionable dates and pork.
