So I have always been told that raw diets are super expensive, hard to feed, and can be very bad for your dog. But recently I’ve been hearing that raw diets are very cheap.
So, what exactly can be fed in raw diets? If you feed raw, what do you feed your dog? For an 80lb 1 year old male GSD, what would your recomended diet be? And how much does a raw diet cost you, on average? Where are the best places to come by meat and carcasses?
Thank you for any information.

It isn’t bad for your dog. I feed all my great danes a BARF diet (biologically appropriate raw food) and they are thriving. I also switched over my older dog, at twelve, and her energy improved, her coat became shinier and all the placque on her teeth was removed.
I feed them beef – ground up, heart, liver or kidney. Ground up chicken with the bone in, with fruits and vegies, chicken backs, chicken heads (kind of gross, I know), chicken necks and gizzards. I also feed all the same from the turkey, but not the head. I have given them buffallo ofal, tripe is wonderful, tuna and salmon too.
The only thing to watch out for is when you give them rich things like kidney for the first time, only give them a very little bit, they need to get accustomed to it, so they don’t get diarhea.
Its a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll never go back.
when my dog was around 1yr old he started eating slowly and leaving food in his bowl that i had to throw away, so i started trying brands and nothing worked, he just begun to worry me more and more and lost all his energy. so i started doing some research and found out that commercial food is not good for your pet and that with raw diet they also live longer.
what i feed everyday is mix 1 hand full of mince beef, some fresh vegetables with rice and my dog always clean his bowl and is very energetic , and his coat is shinier as well.
not expensive just 2 kg that will last about 2 weeks a pack of frozen vegetables
You can feed any meats you can think of as far as I know. If you can find a co-op in your area you can buy meat in bulk and save money. I’ve heard people mention ethnic grocery stores to find cheap meat. Check butchers, local supermarkets. Sometimes you can find marked down meat. There are some yahoo groups you can join too.
You need to get the book GIVE YOUR DOG A BONE it’s great and full of advice…..the diet is not expensive but can be lots of work unless you have a large freezer! as fresh food doesn’t keep like kibble does!
Enjoy!
there is a great raw food company. it’s called nature’s variety. check it out.
A raw diet to me would be carrots and other hard veggies….Like with people that would be best. Otherwise I’m not sure what is meant by “raw diet”
If you have heard they are very bad for your dog, why would you want to feed it to them?
