I see a lot of food questions on here. I think a raw, species-appropriate diet consisting of meat, bones, and organs is the absolute best way to feed any dog since they are carnivores; merely domesticated wolves in designer clothing. Also, I don’t think a raw diet should contain any amount of fruits, vegetables, or grains since these are species-inappropriate foods and while small amounts of these probably wouldn’t hurt a dog, I think they are unnecessary. Some will argue that dogs consume the partially digested leftover fruits, veggies, etc in the intestines of their prey but that’s a myth. A lot of people feel the same way I do, but a lot also strongly oppose this method. Do you agree or disagree? Provide evidence/opinions for your thoughts.
I feed my dog raw and he’s doing great on it. I recommend it to anyone who has the time and commitment to doing it properly.
Yes
I had my dog on a raw diet for a while.. he did great on it, Plaque came off his teeth that regular brushing did not take care of. His skin and coat looked good, and he was also very fit and lean.
I have a few concerns with handling raw meat and having raw meat on the floor now that my baby is more mobile- crawling around and walking. I plan to resume the raw diet when the weather warms up so the dog can be fed outside.. Im also considering purchasing a crate to feed him in.
The proof is in the pudding I guess. If someone knows how to feed BARF, knows the quantity of each nutrient the dog needs etc. Then go for it. A healthy dog is a healthy dog. I don’t have time for that meal prep.
I’ve fed Purina Pro Plan Performance for 50 years with dogs good coats, good teeth, high energy and good skin. What can i say?
I agree, but people dont always have time/space to feed raw, so they feed kibble. I feel that if it is a high quality of kibble, then it is fine. I want to feed raw, but mom doesnt want to.
lol it’s not really time consuming.
(although I tell people it is to get out of doing things ie: staying late at work lol)
I agree.
I personally don’t feed a raw diet to my rotti, to be completely honest I find it easier to give her kibble (very high quality though) as well as a high quality wet food. Having said that I know of 2 people who do feed the raw diet, my one friend’s dog had terrible skin allergies, it was awful, the dog suffered terribly, her vet suggested the raw food diet and her dog is completely cured of the skin problems. The vet said it was due to the chemicals in the prepared food. Another dog owner I know, always walks by our house with 2 huskies, one day I was outside and we started talking,…the dogs were 12 and 13 years old !!! I could NOT believe it they looked so much younger and they swear it is due to the raw food diet…they not only give the dog the meat but vegetables as well..raw carrot…it seems to be working. (interesting questions you have posed
do NOT try raw meat PLEASE!!!! The meat could have something very harmful to a dog in it! i would stick yo Benaful or whatever its called, very good choice!
While the domestic dog is from the same family as the wolf, and their DNA is very similar, I don’t believe this method of feeding would be beneficial to your dog because dogs, like people, need to eat a balanced diet. Have you had this diet plan evaluated by your vet or a doggie nutritionist (yes, they do exist)? There are health problems that can be caused, or exacerbated, by only feeding your dog meat. Not to mention digestive problems. And raw meat can be contaminated with bacteria like e coli, which will make your dog sick or even kill him. Keep in mind wolves in the wild are not monitored, so we have no idea how a raw diet affects their health and life span. I found an article from a vet online that you may find helpful: http://www.vetinfo.com/dogdiet.html. Wikipedia also details a raw-food study with cats that ended with the raw-fed animals having a taurine deficiency and led researchers to conclude that “a natural diet may not always be as healthy as imagined, and that even measuring nutrient values may not predict how a diet will perform after being fed for many months.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_feeding
