Raw Tripe? Your Thoughts On Feeding It To Your Dog?

Ive just spoke to my breeder to find out what he feeds his Stud Bull Terrier, he feeds him 2lbs of raw tripe a day, the dog looks great! I would like to try this, what are your thoughts or experience on this? Do you get it from you local butchers? Is it expensive?

Tripe is often used as dog food. I feed it to my dogs as part of their raw diet. You don’t want to buy it from the butcher though, the stuff they sell is bleached and has al the goodness taken out of it. There are several companies that sell tripe specifically for dogs though, and they’re not expensive. I’ll list them below (UK specific ones, as that’s where I am. I don’t know about in the US and don’t know where you live). Just google them to find phone numbers and websites.
You can feed tripe and biscuits, many people do. I’ve been told you shouldnt fed them together as they have differnt digestion rates… that doesn’t really make sense to me though… *shrugs*
Personally I feed a completely raw diet. 80% meat (including tripe), 10% offal (liver and kidney) and 10% edible raw bones. My dogs are doing fantastically on it! You’re supposed to feed a total of 2-3% of your dog’s ideal body weight a day. There’s two Yahoo! groups dedicated to the raw diet, rawfeeding and Britbarf. They’re full of all the info you need to get started on a raw diet.

It is not the bleached tripe that butchers sell, its called “green tripe” and it looks nothing like what butchers sell. It is said to be very nutritious, however the smell is horrendous, however it’s very cheap. There is no way that you can buy this from a butcher, it is unbleached and the partially digested contents of the stomach are included. Pet shop sell this minced or chopped and after it is defrosted it is eaten raw. Your dog will do handstands for green tripe.

Yuk!!!!Got my puppy and the breeder supplied us with raw tripe I was nearly sick. There is much nicer stuff to feed your dog on that will keep it in really good condition, you can buy a supermarket value chicken now for about 2 quid I know what I would rather have to deal with at dinner time.Oh and by the way as tripe is stomach lining its as cheap as chips as not many people want it.

I wouldn’t go as far as to feed 2 pounds of it each day. Half a cup should be plenty, if not too much.
Also, don’t buy the “white” tripe that is available at most grocery stores. White tripe has been bleached so that many of the nutrients are gone.
Make sure it’s Green Tripe. I believe it can be purchased canned as well.

My dogs have raw green tripe nearly every day – I’ve been feeding it for around 20 yrs, but even my GSDs don’t have 2lb a day – maybe around a lb plus a wholemeal mixer.
I buy in bulk (around 300lb at a time and it costs around 30p per pound)

Its very popular as dog food, you can buy it from any butcher.

I have fed it..if you cook it leave the house or open all doors and windows, IT STINKS!!

  8. Poppet says:

No problem with that, we used to feed our Staff pups cubed pigs heart.
    Tripe makes them stink, lol!!

  9. Beebs says:

I think that amount of tripe is a bit excessive!
Tripe is great to feed dogs, but no where near that much per day… Make sure the tripe is green and beware, it makes the dog smell!
If you’re just starting out feeding tripe to your bully, start out with very, very small amounts so as to not upset your dogs stomachs. Each week you can start adding more and more tripe to your dogs diet (but please, less than 2 pounds daily!)
You can definitely get it from the butchers and I don’t think its expensive, but then again everyone has different ideas of what expensive is :)
The stud dog is beautiful. I bet Mack and Arnie are gorgeous too!
    Good luck with the tripe.
    *ETA*
Oops! I read it as “Here is Mack & Arnies Dad”, not “here is Mack, Arnies Dad”… Silly me… Maybe I need a coffee? Haha.
Yes, you could feed in addition to kibble, but if you are considering feeding raw tripe, have you considered changing Arnie over to a raw diet all together? There are many health benefits from the raw diet and people (including myself) swear by it.
Of course, you will get many mixed responses about feeding raw and it is totally personal choice, but in my opinion it’s definitely worth looking into.

2 pounds of tripe a day is crazy!
Are you sure he said 2 pounds a day?
You should only feed a little bit every day with a raw diet or you can feed a bit more once or twice a week
Green tripe (don’t ask for raw tripe, it being raw is a given) costs anywhere from $2 – $3 per pound. I consider it expensive, but the benefits outweigh the cost for me.
ETA – yikes! I never heard such a thing – reason is my 2.5 year old lab only gets 1.5lbs of raw a day, the pup gets between 2 and 2.5 lbs of raw a day – that’s why i’m a little stunned that he gives 2lbs a day – does he feed anything else??
ETA – Greek – why in the world would you cook green tripe! LOL GROSS!!!
