Is A Raw Diet Good For Dogs? Or Is Something Else Better?

I have heard that feeding a Raw Diet to a dog, is healthy for it. But I don’t know it just sounds stupid feeding your dogs bones. But I also don’t’ really know anything about it. So is it good or bad to feed your dog a Raw Diet? Please answer this!

Ok. think of it as this.
What would your dog eat in the wild?
It would bring down some animal and eat it.
    the entire thing.
    What is in an animal.
    1. Bones (have you ever seen a wolf with rotting teeth? No because bones help clean those teeth!)
    2. Meat (full of protein and helpful bacteria)
    3. The contents of the stomach… lots of people forget this lets say your dog in the wild brings down a rabbit. that rabbit would have carrot and grass and such in its tummy the dog digests that and gets those extra nutrients.
The question I always ask too is why cook your dogs food? Do you see wolves running around with stoves?
When you cook the meat and other such yummies you reduce the nutrients the dog would be getting from it.
I always suggest that if you are going to look at the barf diet (bones and raw foods) to supplement with a good dry food i.e Hill science diet, eukanuba or bonnie (purina)
Because obviously there are wolves that don’t get ALL the nutrients that we can give our dogs so give it in the form of dry biscuits.
p.s Barf diet is NOT alot of hard work… if you are lazy (like me at times) You can buy Barf Patties at pet stores Voila! easy!
Or if you have more time get pet mince from a butcher (hormone free) grind up carrots apples pears and such add a dollop of yogurt , an egg (shiny coat!) and a spoonful of garlic ( natural flea killer)
p.s.s (sorry I read everyone elses comments and think… they don’t know what they’re on about.)
Humans have bacteria in their mouths to break down other bacteria same with dogs (dogs eat poo remember feeding raw meat doesn’t kill your dogs…)
Dogs eat trash! They eat Poo! Their mouth bacteria is stronger than ours! I’m not saying to give your dog maggot infested meat (even though they would probably eat it anyway) But if you get the meat from a respectable hormone free butcher your dog will be fine!!!!
p.s.s.s ARGHHHH is that person CRAZY! take his dog away from him NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER boil and bone and give it to your dog!
    cooked bones SPLINTER!
you can give your dog a raw bone that might have a bug on it and the dog throws up… (Poor puppy… highly unlikely but it might happen if the bone is old…)
Or you can give your dog a cooked bone which splinters and perforates the bowel… do you have 3,000 dollars spare to fix that kind of problem!

It’s fine for a dog. It’s just a lot more work.
If you want Raw Diet quality nutrition, look at Blue Buffalo food. It has all of the things a dog would need in a raw diet, and because it’s a dry food, it cleans the teeth as your dog eats. The food is almost entirely organic. It has NO fillers, all of the meat received zero antibiotics the last 30 days before processing, ensuring that your dog isn’t getting diseased meat, but isn’t chowing down on a medicine cabinet either.
If you continue with the raw diet, avoid beef, as it is hard to digest. Lamb, chicken, and venison are great meats. Use brown rice, whole, rolled oats, or barley as your carbs. Make sure to add veggies and things too– dogs need vitamins like we do. Depending on the dog, you might even want to add a little bit of a supplement to their food. Large dogs, for instance, should be eating lamb because it is a natural source of glucosamine, but a glucosamine and chondroiton supplement will help to boost their joint health. Some little dogs, such as doxies, would benefit from similar supplements because of their lanky bodies and short legs, which puts a lot of strain on their tiny hips and vertebrae.
If you decide it’s a lot of work, I really recommend Blue Buffalo dog food. It’s one of the best you can buy, plus it’s made in America with 100% American ingredients, so you’re guaranteed it’s safe and doesn’t have any wonky Chinese chemicals floating around in it.

It depends on what school of thought you belong to.In the US most people and l mean pet people feed their dogs basically dry food or tinned,l do not although l am a breeder l am also a vet nurse and believe in raw mixed with cooked with a little dry. There are a few books about this topic and one is by a man called Billinghurst called “give a dog a bone”l do not go as far as that.My dogs have a varied diet of raw chicken wings, raw beef mince, raw chicken necks, cooked rice pasta and veg mixed with cooked lamb mince or beef mince and they also get a good dose of garlic and if young calcium.l do use some Dry food but not much. This is a personal choice and you have to feel comfortable with what you are feeding your pet,l avoid canned meat like the plague as what the tim says it has in it is not the truth and has very little nutritional value although a quick meal for a lazy owner. Some people even go as far as feeding offal combined with the above that’s up to you..Giving your dog a meat diet does not mean only bones all sorts of raw meat and all dogs appreciate a good meaty uncooked bone esp marrow bones.

RAW is the absolute BEST thing you could EVER do for your dog.
Cooking the food breaks down and destroys the nutrients and vitamins, it also makes it much harder for the dog to digest.
First of all to ISA: if you “Boiled the meat” you did NOT feed your dog raw food. Raw means “not cooked”.
And to the IDIOT who said to boil bones, what the hell is wrong with you? You NEVER EVER EVER feed a dog cooked bones EVER, because cooked bones splinter and could KILL the dog if they perforate any organs.
Raw bones are very healthy for dogs, what they do is break them down to get to the marrow and occasionally eat small portions of the bone as well. (bone is full of calcium and is very good for your dogs teeth, and bone structure).
Just because raw food is dangerous for humans does not mean it is for dogs, there is way to much for me to write here but I am going to include a few links in the sources box that will tell you everything you need to know.
Please note as well: Raw fed dogs require muscle meat, organs, bone and marrow and Raw Meaty bones is better then the barf diet.
    hope this helps
    good luck

Raw feeding is incredibly good for dogs. There is almost no risk at all for bacteria or parasites. People who feed raw are amazed at the drastic changes in health that their dog gets. They are much more healthy than their kibble fed alternatives. Raw also makes their teeth immaculately clean.
FEED raw, it’s the best there is.

Dogs can handle raw meat, but cooking is advised to prevent unwanted diseases passing to your dog.
And bones alone is by no means healthy. You can cook a balanced meal with meat, carbohydrates, oil and fibers.
I have serious doubts about dry dog food these days. I hear too many criticisms.

It depends on whom you ask. The popularity of raw food diets–especially those that are prepared and sold online or in stores–has been rising in recent years. Owners say that raw food keeps their dogs healthier and happier, more energetic and promotes longer life.
If you’re considering this type of diet, it’s not just a matter of buying a pound of ground round and tossing it your pet’s dish. Raw food must provide a balance of vitamins and minerals, so research–and discussions with your vet–are important before starting.
Not all vets, however, are on board regarding raw food. Although the American Veterinary Medical Association does not take an official stance on the subject, a spokesman said the organization generally discourages feeding raw food because of the possibility of nutritional deficiency and disease transmission for pets and humans through the handling of raw meat.

Raw feeding is the best thing you can feed dogs. Some people like the ideal and have time for it but if you don’t have the time for it i would suggest a great kibble base food that’s the next best thing to Raw feeding. Its called “EVO Red Meat”.
If you like the idea of feeding raw, but prefer a gently cooked food that provides benefits that match raw, frozen or home prepared high-meat pet diets, EVO is the answer. EVO is the first grain-free ancestral diet that provides the benefits of modern nutrition in a safe, convenient and cost-effective natural food. EVO is an alternative for raw feeders and home-cookers. Its for ALL LIFE STAGES from puppy hood throughout Adulthood.
Here is their site to learn more about the Dog food (Kibble base)::::http://www.evopet.com/products/default.a…

raw diet is great! but it’s really hard. like when my dog was sick we gave her a raw diet with boiled chicken and boiled rice with some blueberries. she LOVED it. but kaya(my dog) also likes kibbles with a little boiled ground meat in it. (meat juice too!) I SUGGEST KIBBLES WITH SOME GROUND MEAT (BOILED) BECAUSE ITS EASY. but get good kibble brand not the no name kind. kaya does well with innova but after a while, try to switch it up. kibbles are also good for teeth. but raw diet is great but lots of work so unless you have LTOS of time, i suggest a good kibble brand with some ground beef thats boiled .(keep the meat juice!) make a lot of meat at once and put it in ontainers in fridge
    hope this helps!

some vets say it’s good, some say it’s bad. my opinion, it’s BAD! think about it, would you eat raw meat? there’s millions of germs and bacterias on uncooked meat. dogs are domestic animal, they should eat like us. i feed my dogs “blue holistic dry food”, it works great for both my 80 ibs 1.5 yr old and 5 ibs 14 yr old~~ I really suggest cooked food!

Raw diets are a great option for your dog. Possibly one of the best things you can do for your dog.

Always boil the food before you give it to your dog or just put him on dog food, don’t take any risk.
Giving them bone occasionally is not a bad idea but make sure you boil it.
