I want to feed my cat what she’d eat in the wild. I bought Science Diet Nature’s Best (obviously she wouldn’t eat kibble in the wild but it’s better than grocery store cat food) and it has vegetables and fruit (like cranberries) in it. I was reading “Cat” on wikipedia and it says that cats’ digestive systems aren’t made to digest and process vegetables, just meat. And in the wild she’d be hunting birds and mice and insects. So, would raw organic chicken be a good diet for her? Is there anything else I should add in? How much should I feed her a day? Thank you ![]()

It is truly amazing how little some pet owners know about their own pets and their digestive systems.
Cats are indeed carnivores. And their digestive tracts are designed for a steady diet of (RAW) meat. And that meat can be left rotting in the sun for three days and they will still eat it and not get sick. Their systems are not the same as ours and they are not affected as badly as we are by the things that crawl on their food. Oh; a cat can still get ill from some bacteria but the chances of it dying are remote.
My cat eats meat. I do have dry food on hand but with what the cats eats outside and the meat scraps from the kitchen it rarely eats the dry food.
Don’t just feed her the chicken, feed her a variety of meats if thats what you think is best. I dont neccesarily agree with the your choices but she still needs a varitey because chicken might not have all of the nutrients she needs.
see, I dont agree but she doesn’t care! she alreay made her decision and I gave her advice on what she wanted. why do people try to talk people out of things when that wasn’t what they wanted to know?
I would suggest boiling it. Sure they eat raw food in the wild…but just to be absolutely sure she doesn’t get parasites I would boil the chicken. You should also buy her dietary supplements if you’re going that route. Chicken alone won’t get her what she needs. Why do you think cats live so much longer in captivity? Give her about a cup of chicken a day and supplements.
NOOOOOOO. Do not feed your cat raw meat of any kind. She is not used to it and will cause upset stomach and possibly even the same diseases we can get from eating raw meat. Raw poultry and pork cause extreme food poisoning in people…
it’d be okay, but it is very important that if you are going to feed your cat raw meat, that is all she can eat
you cannot switch between meat and kibble. its either one or the other
I think your cat should be in the wild or born in the wild to have raw food. My cat vomits everytime he had insects. I don’t think raw food is a healthy choice for your cat.
Unless you killed the chicken yourself I would highly recommend against it. It will be riddled with bacteria. Why do you want to do this anyway?
never give a cat raw meat it will give them worms. I had to stop letting my cat out because it got worms. the vet said it was from eating birds and squirrels.
make sure you cook the chicken first before giving it to your cat, boil it.
Hi, well I dont know much about the raw chicken and I know that was your main question, but I want to suggest you buy better quality cat food other than Science Diet if you want a healthier cat.
My cat got really ill a few months back, and he was blocked, aka he couldn’t pee. The vet told me it was no more general cat food. Those foods, (not sure about SD), have main ingredients of like corn meal and water… So obv corn meal is not what wild cats run too…
I suggest a specialty cat food store. They have a ton of options, many probably better than the one I’m going to suggest. They do tend to be more expensive, but its far better quality.
I use, Nutro Max Cat – Adult formula
The main ingredients are chicken broth, chicken, beef liver, cod, beef lamb, rice bran, and ground rice. (then other things I’m not going to type the entire list)
I’m also not sure of the name, but I know they have totally organic versions, and only meat options. Def check out a store like this, or even check to buy online!
Good luck with your kitty!!
Actually, SD isn’t better than grocery store food. It’s on a par. The least I can say about this is that quality varies between this class of food, even within brands. You really have to evaluate each food on its own merits.
But that said, yes, organic chicken would be a great food for your cat. It can’t be just that alone, though. You’ll need to supplement to ensure the diet is balanced.
Here’s a link to my blog on raw feeding. It doesn’t provide all the answers but I have links where you can learn more.
And while organic would be good, it’s not strictly necessary if you want to cut costs.
EDIT: I’ve been away for a while but I see little has changed. Myths and incorrect information still abound. And the naysayers still don’t provide backup for what they claim.
You CAN feed raw meat AND commercial foods, even kibble. Kibble isn’t a great choice, of course, and I wouldn’t serve them at the same time, but you can feed both.
Cats’ digestive systems are better able to handle raw meat than a human’s.
You can find recipes that use cooked meats, but you’re on your own there – I can’t help you. Making your own food using cooked meats is still a step above even the best commercial food, but raw is even better than that. Heat kills off nutrients.
This might be hard to understand,.. because it’s a bit confusing for people.
I will try this this way,..
Humans have been adapting and evolving to eating meat that’s cooked over fire. We’ve changed enough so to the point some people’s bodies go ” Raw meat? The hell is this?” and can’t really digest it.
Silly as this sounds and as hard as this is to follow,.. Domestic Dogs have adapted and evolved to being able to eat fire cooked meat, too. It’s pretty easy when you find out they’ve been eating our table scraps since they were still wild wolves,.. even as far back at picking at our trash and not socializing with us.
Cats get quite much more complicated. People see them as these independent snooty things that don’t obey. In reality, Cats have been pampered for an unknown amount of time ( they are starting to suspect this goes further back then dogs but just wasn’t as wide spread way back then). Us humans would prepare and serve them fancy foods.
Now, here we are. People are detached from their cats and letting them over populate and run wild. Because people are idiots and have let this go on long enough for reasons they don’t even know the origin of.. cats are being forced into the reverse of what they are. 3,000 years ago if you were a cat you’d have a special cook come to you and bring you some cooked blend of foods, today you are being chased by a dog and a BB gun without a roof over your head and you only get the best food by digging through people’s garbage.
While it’s true Cats have been pushed for their Mouser abilities on and off for the last few hundred years, it’s not true that they are strangers to cooked foods. For thousands of years they were offered cooked food, praise, and their own place to curl up and isolate to get a break from people touching them and talking to them. Now they are tossed out on the streets or trapped in rooms where the easiest pray to find are bugs, pet fish, rodents, pet rodents, and pet birds,.. occasionally wild birds and bird eggs.
In the “wild” cats do eat grass, veggies, and some even fruits from time to time. Actually, if you are a “wild” domestic cat then you eat grass daily. Even if you are hunting, when you are chomping down your meal you have a little of that meal’s favorite foods on the side.
Absolutely DO NOT feed your cat RAW MEAT. Food born illness is some times life threatening, chicken bones are deadly, and cats are use to larger animals being cooked before they are fed them. Organic some times means neglected of basics you would give your pets by visiting the vet regularly. That means Organic Meat has a higher chance of having some illnesses or contaminations. So Organic needs to be cooked thoroughly when you are a human, certainly.
Chicken, Turkey, and Pig should always be cooked thoroughly because of the food born illness that they carry. Beef/Cow is less likely to carry these, that’s why people like to have them “raw”. With Beef/Cow you can just brown the outside withoutthoroughlyy cooking it to kill somecontaminantss.
Do not give you cat fish. Most cats are allergic to some seafood. Fish are too high in certain things so cats can easily get too high a dose of these things if they eat Fish. Currently Fish are too high in Metals and some other things so they are honestly not safe for humans to eat more then once a month at this point. Any fish you eat was wild at some point so they can’t just simply adjust the water that the fish are in.
Never give your Cat Chicken or Turkey Bones or access to them. Rarely feed your Cat turkey and give smaller then a meal worth. Turkey contains some chemicals that a Cat can over dose on which isdamagingg. If they even reach a certain point they will have damage that will provefatall.. even if the results are not immediatelyapparentt.
Try to cut up Beef/Cow into small pieces/chops/cubes. Cats can create blockages if they eat pieces that are too large. Chicken and Turkey shreds easily, but try to cut into pieces or strips under 3 inches… best to make them about an inch and a half. Cats some times cause problems for themselves if they swallow whole 2-6 inch pieces.. it can cause them to gag and/or vomit.. it’s also hard to digest.
Bake food, do not fry. Boiling removes nutrients. Never prepare food with Onions or Garlic,.. cats are allergic to these usually and some times enough isfatall.
Do not give your cat organs. You shouldn’t eat organs because whatever bad thing is in them clogging them transfers to your organs and clogs or attacks your organs. Cats are much smaller so it takes less to destroy their organs. So no Liver, Kidney, Chitlen, or Hearts for kitty. If for some reason you have eye or brain those are fine but the eyes need to be smaller then your cat’s eyes.
If you cat has interest in Milk, feed them Goat’s Milk. They may or may not be allergic to Goat’s Milk so monitor them for a couple days. Goat’s Milk is better for Social animals ( Apes, Humans, Dogs, Cats,..) then Cow’s Milk. Most cats have some problem with Cow’s milk but it’s very rare for a cat to have a problem with Goat’s Milk. Goat’s Milk is given to Big Cats in Zoos as the best second to Mother’s milk.
cats are not wild…they are domesticated animals..giving a cat raw meat is not a good idea…heard of salmonella ??? e coli ??? wikipedia is made up of comments from PEOPLE and THEIR knowledge, and it’s not always correct.
