Is It Ok To Feed My Dogs Raw Chicken Thighs?

i feed them a raw diet consisting of chicken necks & breast, organ meat, fish, rice (this is the only thing that’s cooked), veggies and some fruit as treats. Sometimes necks aren’t always available and breast are a bit more expensive than thighs. I am sure you all have heard of the risks of feeding bones so I usually cut up the breasts into small pieces .

There are 2 things I would change here:
    1. Ditch the rice and veggies, dogs don’t need ‘em.
    2. More variety in the meat! Get some pork, beef, goat, rabbit, turkey, emu, whatever you can find, but they need more variety, especially if they are only getting commercially raised animals.
“I am sure you all have heard of the risks of feeding bones” which are? There are risks to feeding COOKED bones, but with raw bones pretty much the only risk is choking due to feeding pieces that are too small or possibly tooth damage due to feeding very hard bones like cow femurs or knuckle bones. The solution to choking fears/problems is to feed pieces that are bigger than the dog’s head or awkwardly shaped. A huge plus to feeding raw is the physical and mental engagement dogs get from having to chew and rip their food; you cutting it up eliminates this stimulation as well as many of the dental benefits to feeding raw.
I haven’t been feeding raw that long, but these are all suggestions from people who have been feeding raw anywhere from months to decades, so I trust them. Have you joined any yahoo goups about raw feeding? I highly suggest you do, they are great sources of info and experience.http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RawCh…http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfe…http://www.rawfed.com/mythshttp://www.rawfeddogs.nethttp://www.rawlearning.com
ADD: Your dog is unlikely to get salmonella from raw meat since it is a carnivore. It’s digestive tract is short and strongly acidic making it difficult for bacteria to take up residence long enough to cause problems. They can get it from kibble because kibble takes much longer to digest which allows things like salmonella to grow and sicken the dog.

You shouldn’t feed your dogs any raw meat, period, because it can have salmonella, E. coli, and other germs. It’s the same reason you’re supposed to wash your hands after touching raw meat.

Do NOT give them any chicken bones, especially thigh bones! They can die! It is Ok to give them the meat, but remove teh bones, especially teh very thin ones. But the other bones too are dangerous.
As for the chicken meat, it may contain salmonella, so it is best to cook it.
