I feed my dogs a prey model raw diet. Even my puppies have been eating this diet since they were 6 weeks old. They’ll be 12 weeks old this week and look wonderful. Nice soft coats, healthy muscular bodies, not fatty ones. They have no signs of worms at all. My vet loves the way they look.
None of my dogs are aggressive nor bloodthirsty. They are a bunch cuddle bugs who can put out some pretty mean sounding barks, but would rather lick you death.
Here’s a bit of informaiton on raw diets.
This diet cosists of feeding rmb’s, offal, organs etc. While its not as simple as throwing a chicken in a bowl everyday, its not that complicated once you get started.
My pups have been getting a raw diet since they were 6 weeks old. They love it.
They get, game hens, chicken breast, chicken thighs, drumsticks, beef and chicken liver, beef heart, beef skirts, catfish, ground turkey, pork ribs, pork roast, beef cheeck, I buy what’s on sale, and in bulk when I can.
I feed them 2% of their expected adult weight daily, so each pup gets about 1.5lbs of food divided into 3 daily meals.
There’s a bit more to than what I described it here, but all in all, its pretty simple, and is only as expensive as you make it.
Yahoo has some rawfeeding groups, there’s also a group called “rawdogs” on Livejournal, this thread on Dogster http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_D… has lots of information about raw feeding. All 3 places are glad to help new raw feeders get started.
Let’s also dispel some myths about rawfeeding with this link http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html
Some good books on the subject are Raw Meaty Bones and Works Wonders both by Tom Lonsdale, an Australian vet. And The BARF Diet by Dr. Ian Billinghurst.
yes, Yes, YES!!! Dogs are dogs NOT humans – they are designed to eat carcasses (raw meat, bones and offal) not cooked grains, vegetables and meat.
The first link has some good information on why you shouldn’t feed cooked foods and grains/vegetables and explains why a dog’s digestive system is designed for raw food. Dogs eat poop and lick their own butts and people worry about raw meat?!? )
My girl has been raw fed since we brought her home at nine weeks. She has been fed this way all through a trouble free pregnancy and birth and her pups have been weaned straight onto this diet.
Find a forum where you can discuss this with people who feed raw meat diets. They can provide a lot of information to you. I have one dog, a 4 year old Catahoula, that gets a raw chicken leg quarter every day along with her dry dog food. Before we had her, we had two wolf hybrids on the same diet. They lived to 12 and 13 years old and were outdoor dogs.
A raw diet is great if you have a good mentor and are selective with the foods you buy. Here’s a great site I used when I raw fed my dogs:http://www.rawdogranch.com
I would also add a bit of Activia to their diet which is great for their digestion if you decide to go with a raw diet.
A significant part of the diet is “raw meaty bones”. This could be chicken necks, wings, backs- preferably not weight bearing bones. This will not hurt dogs when raw UNLESS they tend to gulp their food rather than chew it. Then it would be good to grind their “raw meaty bones”.
ive been feeding my dogs raw meat for quite a while…no issues.
I don’t see the issue with boiling unless you are feeding something with bones. In that case they may splinter if boiled
no thats fine the dogs digest bacteria lots better than our bodies thats why they can eat all kinds of stuff my blue heeler loves raw meat and it has never hurt him
We feed our shepard rotweiller raw steak sometimes and we have had no problems, just don’t feed them pork bones or chicken bones chicken is the absolute worst thing to give dogs (with bones or raw) bones break easily and are small and they can choke or cause internal problems and raw chicken can cause major problems like salmonella poisoning, but raw beef I see no problems!

Box: I am one dog lover/owner that does not support the raw meat diet for dogs. Many many owner are for it. Sorry, I’m not.
Yes, it is fantastic for dogs to get raw meat.
No, don’t boil – it you do that you’re ruining half the reason it’s so good for them.

Yes it is ok.
I give my dogs raw chicken wings as a treat.

They say feeding puppies can cause worms and also make them mean. You might want to boil it first. Especially if it is pork.
Yes it’s better to boil it.
