When Feeding A Cat A Raw Piece Of Chicken…?

on the bone, should I be feeding the cat the skin or not? Lets say a drumstick, for instance, should I not be removing the other smaller bone as well?

    Hi Unicornrider,
When I feed raw neck bones to my cats, I remove the skin, and cut the neck into pieces which are easy for my cats to chew on. I thoroughly wash the necks and then freeze them, hoping to eliminate most of the harmful bacteria.
While cats seem to prefer the smaller bones contained in necks and wings, raw bones are a natural part of a feline’s diet and help remove plaque from teeth.
Here is a great article on raw bones and meat. While it is for both cats and dogs, the cat section is excellent.http://www.squidoo.com/rawbone
    Hope this helps,

Why exactly are you giving your cat raw chicken? There’s a risk of disease or parasites, so I wouldn’t give a cat raw meat. If you insist, remove the bone so he doesn’t choke or eat a splinter of it. The skin is full of fat, so don’t feed him very much.

I would remove the skin if the cat is fat, but if it’s a healthy weight, I might leave it.
I have no official stance on this, nor have I seen one. The weight of the cat is the only thing I can think of to go by.

You shouldn’t be feeding your cat raw chicken. Haven’t you heard of salmonella poisoning. And chicken bones are not good for cats or dogs. Why not get your cat a kitty food with chicken it if you want to give her/him chicken.

Bones are dangerous, whether they are large or small. They can splinter and your cat could accidentally swallow a piece. I don’t see why the skin would be any problem though.

Feed boneless meats for a few meals so the kitten gets used to eating the raw food. Then add an easy bone like a bone-in game hen breast half. The bottom portion of the bone is very flexible and should be readily edible. The upper portion of the bone is fairly hard and the kitten may not eat it, but at least it will experience the texture of bone. If the breast is very meaty, cut off a portion of the meat to feed for later so that the kitten does not fill up on meat and not get to the bone. If the kitten is very tiny you can try feeding a game hen wing; once the kitten has learned how to chew the bones, though, I would strongly recommend feeding the wing attached to a game hen breast so the kitten does not become “too bold” and tries to swallow the wing whole (I know this from experience!!). You can also try feeding chicken necks or wings as raw meaty bones for a kitten. The kitten may not be able to eat much of it and will thus need some supplemental ‘meaty meals’, but it should quickly get the hang of chomping on bones. Before you know it, your kitten will be disposing of raw meaty bones with ease! When this occurs, then you should feed pieces large enough for the kitten to really work at its meal.
highly recommend that anyone wishing to feed their cat a raw diet join the Yahoo! RawCat group. Be sure to also visit RawfedCats.org for some great information on feeding cats a raw diet.

well, really disappointed on what people have been ansewering…” why would you feed your kitten raw?”. for these ignorant people… CATS EAT RAW!!! there was nothing such canned food with legs for them to hunt or kibbles growing out of trees millions of years ago when they evolved DUH!
now about the question.. good u have decided on feeding raw.. i hope many people switch to this diet soon so comercial foods go down the road and disappear forever!! they are disgustinG!
feeding the bone, skin, meat and organs is great!! i would also give you cat chiken wings and necks for him to clean its teeth.
there is no harm on the chicken leg with bone and skin! go for it i think he will love it! also give him meaty chiken breast! my kitty loves it!
    hope i helped!

The skin is just as much a part of the chicken as is the carcase or the bones. Cats in the wild eat raw meat. I feed stray cats raw chicken (they will not eat dried food and I cannot control their daily intake if I leave canned food out for them) The wings, wing tips, chicken frames, necks, feet, and even the gibblets, all without the slightest problem. Just remember to cut the meat into smaller portions than a whole wing. Debone if you like.
If you must feed the cat ‘raw’ food remove the smaller leg bone(s). Most people steer clear of giving their cats fresh raw meat due to their concerns over bacteria, salmonella and contagions, etc. Personally I prefer to lightly boil (blanche in boiling water for 30 seconds) the chicken first for my own piece of mind. But that is just me.

I dunno if you should be feeding it raw chicken or not (microbes and whatnot) but if you’re sure its okay, then you probably should remove the bones at the least… we all know what chicken bones do to dog’s insides… probably not good for a cat either (which usually doesn’t eat bones).

Don’t. Feed your cat raw chicken, that is. Not smart; why are you even asking?
