I Am Feeding My Dog A Raw Diet……..?

I switched her over about a week and half ago. I started her on just chicken (and a couple raw eggs) and she’s been fine. Aside from a bit of gas (ew) the first day or too, she hasn’t had a problem.
I decided to work in a bit of beef liver last night, and not even 5 minutes after she ate, she threw everything up. She was fine before and after. I just gave her chicken again this morning.
Has anyone experienced this before? Do you think the beef liver was just too rich? I had just bought it, and everything was sanitary while I was preparing it.

Yes. The people who assisted me when I was feeding a raw diet suggested feeding solely chicken the first two weeks with a bit of chicken liver during week 2. Then trying either turkey, ham or lamb during week 3 and 4. Liver is very rich and some dogs cannot handle it until they are completely adjusted to the raw diet. You may want to start with a different organ first like lung, heart or giblets. I boiled the beef liver the first two times I fed it since I got it from a rather shady source. Now I can rotate between grain-free kibble with a weekly fish/egg meal and RPM. (Raw prey model) at will without ill effects. I strongly suggest joining a support group for raw feeding until you and your dog are fully adjusted and feel completely secure. Yahoo has some. This is going to sound gross, but did you allow her to eat her freshly regurgitated food again? My dog started throwing up at about the same time after I started her on a raw diet, but since everything that came up was so fresh and nice smelling (not sick looking), I let her eat it again.
I think at that time, she got so enthusiastic about eating her new food that she ate too fast and it came back up. The second time she ate it, it stayed down.
The problem went away in four days, and she never threw up again.

my dog is about 90% raw.
i don’t want to handle meat, so i feed him this dog food:

he LOVES it, and his health has improved immensely since the switch.
    i gradually switched him over.
i totally believe that raw food is the way.
do you have a book on the subject? i think it would be a great idea to invest in one if you plan on making the foods yourself. do you grind up the meat in the grinder, or do u just serve the whole thing to her?
there is a raw feed group on yahoo.
    good luck!

It may have been too rich. Did she eat what she vomited up? Next time, try a little less liver and work up to the amount you’re planning on feeding her regularly (an ounce a day or an organ meal a week, that kind of thing).
    You’re doing well! :)

Beef liver is really rich and some dogs just don’t take to. Most owners try to give it separately. Take a small piece a 1inch chunk or less and offer it to her and see how she takes to it.http://groups.yahoo.com/rawfed < loads of help and advice here.

Try feeding Natures Variety Raw Instincts. I highly recommend it. A lab breeder said that his labs lived over 20 years on it. My lab loves this food and has a shiny healthy coat!

I know it is tempting to rush in and try new things but it is better to go slowly. Stick to one protein source for a week or so and then add one new thing at a time. Try new meats before you add things like liver, heart and kidneys. Remember to aim for about 70-80% meat, 10-15% edible bone and 10-15% organs. No more than about 5% of total food should be liver as this can cause an overload of vitamin A.
I have been raw feeding for some time now (3 cats & 1 dog)and still wouldn’t feed just liver on its own. I bag the offal into part-meal servings and try to make each one different – one might be chicken hearts and liver, the next ox kidney, the next lambs fry and heart and so on……
Vomitting is not unusual behaviour for a carnivore – their stomachs are designed to be able to snarf down large quantities of food at once. Sometimes they bring it back in order to crunch it a bit better. If it doesn’t gross you out too much just let her re-eat it.
