Both of my (approx 30 Kg) German Shepherds are fed with food supplied by Landywoods and I have found the quality to be excellent. Yes you have buy in bulk from Landywoods which requires a lot of freezer space, but after that initial outlay, I find the cost of feeding both my dogs averages less £1.50 a day. This includes chicken wings and pigs offal (liver and kidneys) bought from the supermarket at around a pound per kilo. I often find I can get rabbit for pennies or sometimes free from a local farmer. You may also find that you can get chicken carcass and the like cheaply from a chicken processing plant if you have one nearby.
When you consider the cost of factory produced, toxin laden rubbish, loosely described as pet food, I don’t think this feeding cost is unreasonable. Plus you will have two happy, healthy and active dogs.
Incidentally, I have found Prize Choice to be expensive, too wet and “slushy” and not very good quality
Sometimes sourcing can become a bit of an issue – either feast or famine!!
See if you can find a wholesaler, a farmer or even someone who hunts. I tend to go to about three different places and just hunt for the marked down stuff. One of my friends has found an amazing source for chicken carcasses with the offal still in them and for only 50c each (Australian). This is from a wholesale butcher.
I notice that you haven’t mentioned organs at all. I understand that they can be a bit of an issue in England but really are an essential part of your dog’s diet.
What I did was find a whole-saler of meat that sell their products to grocery stores… and then I buy in quantity.
You may need to consider whether it might be practical to invest in a freezer and buy a whole butchered sheep or hog or half of a steer. I have done this and my family eats the best cuts of meat and the dogs are fed the rest and the bones/scraps/organs.
Right now in my area it is lambing season and I can inexpensively buy lamb and llama as well as calves.
I raw feed too and my dog is doing *awesome*!!!
Try getting some from the farmers near you….good luck!!!!!!
Springer: RAW DIET= BALANCED DIET IF YOU ARE DOING IT CORRECTLY! THEY OBVIOUSLY ARE BECAUSE THEIR DOGS HAVE BEEN ALIVE FOR 18 MONTHS ON IT! DUH!
Rachel: YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DOG NUTRITION DO YOU? YOUR POOR DOGS ARE PROBABLY BEING FED SHITTY KIBBLES AND FU¢KING BITS BECAUSE “DEY WIKE IT”!!!!
Thank you.
We Feed our dogs raw food and our butchers give us free ‘pig parts’ including trotters, heads and insides! also don’t just give them meat. Dogs like fruit and vegetables mushed up. You don’t have to follow this but if u blitz it up with oil and raw egg, our dogs love it!!!
I have to say, I get some good deals from the general supermarkets! If you go in the evening to the reduced section, you will find huge quantities of meat at some really good prices – Tesco and Asda are usually good for this and its not their “value” range either! Tesco also do Lamb hearts and other offals in their meat section.
I got 2 large trays of Lamb kidneys reduced to 49p the other week because they were to be used by the next day. They were frozen, I took them home and put them straight in the freezer – no worries.
Have you tried joining Freecycle.org also? Its a website that has groups in your area where people offer their unwanted items – and you can post asking for “freezer burnt” meat (which is still ok for the dogs) or even other people in your area that feed RAW and you can bulk buy and split between you. I am in London and amazingly, you can find some real great things on there – after all “One mans junk is another Mans treasure”!
And you guys going on about “mumbo jumbo” and “dogs will die/be ill from raw food” – Please refrain from answering questions you have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA ABOUT. I can guarantee our dogs are 100 times healthier than yours. And I bet you feed something like Pedigree/Iams or Bakers.
Just out of interest where do you think the phrase “Fit as a Butchers Dog” came from? No, not the advert. From the days when butchers would feed their dogs all the left-over scraps from their days work – and as “fit as a butchers dog” is meant to mean “the healthiest thing ” and is a compliment.
I’ll star this for my contracts but I just wanted to say this
Springer – Properly balanced? Um hello before kibble made the scene, no one worried about a “proper” and “balanced” diet for their dogs. How do you think dogs survived before kibble? That’s right table scraps and raw leftover from animal slaughter.
They are not asking for opinions on this diet they are asking for ideas on where to find meat for their dogs.
My advice would be talking to other meat vendors, farmers, any one really that you can find and make a good deal with for meat in bulk. If you can talk to the people you currently get you meat from and see if they have any suggestions.
Rachel – wtf are you talking about? Mumbo jumbo? Kibble has been around for less than 100 years that is a FACT.
Raw meat isn’t proper food but dry cereal for every meal 365 days a year is? Riiiggghhhtttt. What color is the sky in your world?
Rachel and Springer-
Raw is the kindest thing you can do for a dog or cat. Look at a wolf- they eat raw meat. So would dogs if left in the wild and taught to hunt, same with cats.
As long as you do it properly, it is the most balanced and nutrient rich diet available. Educate yourself before springing to conclusions.
Also, if your smart about it, raw is just as expensive or cheaper than the leading brand. And the health benefits are way beyong what crap pellets can give.
Take a look at a bag of IAMS. Corn, corn flour, wheat flour, ‘chicken by-products’ (aka heads, feet, undeveloped eggs, intestines) and ‘meat’- and they got SUED for this because it contained euthanized animals and roadkill under the name of ‘meat this meat that’- you call that balanced and healthy? http://www.mflegal.com/petfoodlawsuit .
Also note that this crap is processed and cooked and dried out at high temperatures, destroying most of the nutrients.
omg raw food why are your dogs not on a balanced diet ?????
all dogs should be fed properly a balanced diet why can you not feed your dogs a complete dog food so much more cheaper for you i feed my dogs a complete food and a 15kg bag will last my 2 dogs around 6 weeks and costs me £9
does that work out cheaper for you
why are you doing that. = not very kind in my eyes. f*ck the mumbo jumbo. give your dog proper food. raw meat wont keep him warm in cold winter days! =(
