Raw Feeders.. Quick Question…?

Does anyone know if there have been any studies about using whole carcass rats rather then say rabbit as a meat source?
I was just curious as I was browsing around looking for snake food and wondered if anyone used rat carcass for raw feeding either cats or dogs.. Please include any links you have as I can’t find anything on the subject..
To anyone who’s anti-raw feeding-
I’ve already researched raw feeding and after comparing it to the crud that goes into commercial diets I think the small risk of my pet getting something like E. coli to be much less terrible then the kidney disease and urinary tract illnesses caused by commercial foods.. I personally eat plenty of raw meats without having ever caught any kind of illness from it.. I’d rather have my pet perhaps on rare occasion get a bit of diarrhea rather then die from mold toxins or melamine..

i haven’t personally fed rats, but i bet they’d love it. I have birds fly into my windows fairly frequently, and i let my cats eat them….and those are wild birds. I would use frozen mice rather than rats though. just a personal choice. My cat’s favorite meat is deer meat, they will steal it from my dogs!
edit: i have never added a single supplement to my pets food, and i have been feeding raw for years. for cats, yes you can put down “random” meat, as long as there is organ meat, muscle meat and bones, as well as some whole prey(like an entire rat, fur and all). cats are obligate carnivores, and thrive on just meat, no supplements needed.

I don’t think there are any “studies” on the issue of raw feeding unless you go back to Pottenger in the 1960’s.
Personally I use chicken and turkey and do add supplements for calcium as my cats won’t chew bone. I have some ground whole rabbit on order. Don’t know if my cats will like it and hope they do. A variety of protein source is the best. The rabbit for instance is very low in taurine and it should be supplemented if you use that.
I am on the Yahoo group Whole Cat Health and people there have talked about using frozen “pinkies” (day old mice) and day-old chicks to their cats. I have never heard rats mentioned in the seven years I have been connected with raw feeders.
Neither I nor my cats are quite carnivorous to go to that extreme.

You should only do a RAW diet under the supervision of a holistic vet. You can’t just put random meat on a plate and expect it to be nutritional for your pet. You have to add supplements also.

Rats are too big for a single cat to eat all by himself. And yes you can buy frozen ones from snake shops sure. Whole mice are a lot easier to finish, and it has all the nutrients your cat needs.
