I have a four year old Bichon Frise and a one year old Shih Tzu and I would NOT feed them raw(only my opinion) I feed them an all natural homemad diet it consists of a boiled meat: chicken, beef, buffalo, lamb, veal, turkey a grain: either white or brown rice my vet said brown is healthier different veggies: peas, carrots, s. potatoes, broccoli, squash, turnips, cauliflower and sometimes potatoes but not very often because they are starchy and either yogurt or fat free cottage cheese and a fruit like apples or cranberries, they LOVE it. Our vet said it is very healthy and more people should feed a homemade diet but they don’t have the time. Either way remember to ALWAYS check with your vet BEFORE changing your dogs diet and you can also work with your vet to make a diet for your dogs needs, I hope this helped good luck and enjoy you little Bichons.

I just switched my dog over to raw. She’s being a bit slow with it. I’ve had to sear the meat (cook it just a little so it smells good) for her, but it’s been great. Her poops are MUCH smaller after only a few days.
Dogster has a great forum on raw feeding, and lots of good resources:http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_D…
    Good luck!

Yes. I used a raw diet for over six months for my three dogs, one had a history of having pancreatitis and was getting very sick on the food she was eating before that (Nutro).
All three did great on the raw diet. Because of the history of pancreatitis, I ground the raw meaty bones for all of them. Then later I moved to a place where I had limited freezer and fridge space and went to a healthy kibble that I have kept them on.
But the raw diet, for all three, was GREAT.

My dogs likes the BARF diet so much, I decided to be on it too. I really have not had any problems yet eating raw meat. I buy big pieces of meat like a beef thighs, sheep or goat carcass. My dogs and I simply wrestle the meat off the bones. I lack the jaw strength to eat the bones, so I leave them for my dogs. It has been a real bonding experience getting on the kitchen floor and eating with my dogs.

Very common practice among people with hounds other other hunting dogs – including dachshunds and Jack Russell Terriers.

there are 2 kinds of raw one is straight from the butcher the other is processed and packaged with veggies added. If you feed straight from the butcher freeze the meat 2 weeks before feeding this helps kill anything in or on the meat then you need to add a vitamin supplement. The breeder I get my dogs from feeds all raw and they are very healthy dogs.

My bosses dogs are given raw and they never have had any adverse effects from eating it, they have gotten sick for other reasons but never food. She gives the puppies (and I suggest this if you are going to switch them to raw) “Eagle Pack Holistic Transitions” to help their digestive systems get used to the raw (from mothers milk).
this is the site she buys all of her raw foods from and it has information on raw feeding and transitioning and the benefitshttp://www.aplaceforpaws.com/

check out the barf diet. barf is an acronym for bones and raw food. it is the way wild dogs eat/ate.http://www.barfworld.com/

It is not a good idea for most people, as most do not provide a balanced diet. To be done correctly takes a lot of preparation, time, and doesnt save you any money. Contrary to popular belief, wild dogs are not healthier, and do not have better teeth. I do believe it is a good idea to avoid the preservatives, and over cooking of ingredients, unfortunately many people are not feeding correctly and do their dogs a misservice feeding a raw food diet.

My dogs are both on strictly raw diets and their health has improved dramatically since the switch. My females itchy coat and seasonal hair loss has completely disappeared and they both can’t wait to get their dinner now. It took them a couple of weeks to get adjusted to the food but but after seeing the results there is no way I would go back to feeding them kibble.

    Hi there
Unless you are really dedicated it can be very difficult to make sure they get all the nutrients they need if you are feeding a raw diet. There are also health issues not only for your dogs who can get sick from bacteria on the raw meat but also to you handling the raw meat. Muscle by itself doesn’t have all the nutrients a dog needs which is why in nature predators will eat all of the prey including the intestines and their contents.
I think if you are prepared to take the time to ensure you are preparing a well balanced diet for them and take care with what you feed them it could be a good diet but be aware it will take a lot of effort and time to make sure they are eating a balanced diet that has all the nutrients and vitamins in it that they need.
If you are just wanting to feed them raw meat as a treat on top of their usual diet make sure you allow for this extra food in how much you feed them and freezing the meat before giving it to them is one way of reducing pathogens on the meat.
    Good luck

I am a big advocate for raw diets BUT they have to be done right, not just jumped into.
It is becoming increasingly common for vets to work with you to design a good raw diet for YOUR dog. Please don’t just take some advocate’s advice to just “throw them a bone”. Argh. That drives me nuts.
Many homeopathic/western combo vets will help you with this. Be SURE they are specifically educated with supplemental classes in dog nutrition. Most vets are not.
The other option is a dog nutritionist that works with a vet. You may have to look a bit but it is the safest way to go, imho.
    Good luck with this!

I have fed my dogs raw for a long time. They love it, the health benefits are amazing. I have a 15 year old dog that still hikes with me for 20 miles and a ten year old dog that runs next to my bike 3 miles a few days a week. None of them are on any kind of medication. My young dogs look great too. All my dogs have clean teeth, good breath, shiny coats and none of them smells doggy. I now make my own food and it is easy. Dogs are only 3% geneticly different than wolves and wolves don’t eat kibble, so why should your dog? It is about feeding your dog something biologically appropriate. Read about it, there is a lot of good info on the web. Dr. Ian Billighurst is a great place to start and look for BARF.

It’s an amazing diet for dogs, keeps them extremely healthy and lengthens their life. There’s very minimal risk of the dog getting sick because they’re descended from the wolf, which eats raw meat at every meal. Very rarely do wolves get ill.
    Some companies selling raw:http://www.animalfood.comhttp://www.naturesvariety.comhttp://www.bravorawdiet.com
Or you could try prey-model, which is far cheaper but a little less convenient:http://www.rawlearning.com

  18. ♥†Jesus. He's for everyone†♥ says:

I wouldnt do it, it has a possibility of making your dog sick

  19. erictren says:

No i don’t think it’s good for them. The only raw food I heard that is good is raw eggs mixed with their food. I heard that this makes their coat shiny.
