I see a lot of “raw is bad, feed dog food”, yet some dog food companies make raw dog food. What do people that are pro-dog-food and anti-raw-feeding think about dog food companies that make raw diets?

I think all companies are out to make money. This is a marketing strategy. I hope they actually use high quality ingredients rather than just using any cheap product to boost the bottom line.
I have no doubt that raw is better, but it isn’t convenient in most cases. Large dog breeders seem to be able to do it better than small because the meat doesn’t have to be ground.
Added– I didn’t say they were bad. I said all companies are out to make money. That is the ultimate goal. My husband’s company is out to make money. They wouldn’t stay in business without making money. But I hope that the companies are using good quality ingredients rather than simply looking at the bottom line. Look at what happened to Iams after PG bought it out. Some companies put the bottom line over every thing else.
Real food–homemade raw– is the best. But it is not as convenient as premade. Large dog breeders find it easier because they can use chicken quarters with no problem.
i tried barf, and it was fine, but i just did not have the money and time to continue it. i liked it, and do not have a problem with people feeding raw. i feed solid gold, and i did research it. the problem with most people is they are too cheap to feed their dogs the good foods, and to me that is selfish. your dog is a member of the family, and you should feed it good food and not…corn and sugar {twinkie food for dogs..like kibbles-n-bits}. we just need to keep spreading the word about bad dog foods, and maybe we can get people on our side.
I am not a vet or a health care professional.Feeding a raw species appropriate diet can be a controversial topic.
Most vets have very little nutritional training,I am going to emphasise that you never feed cooked bones.
Raw whole foods are what are dogs are designed to eat.
my five small dogs always have whole foods, and they have never been to the vets, tin food is cheaper but next time you pick up the tin look what is in it. ++++++++++++++++
I hope you and your dogs enjoy many healthy years together.
I have to agree with the other posters before me so far. I think this is a marketing strategy. Some people would love to feed raw but dont have the time or the patience for the prep so maybe this is an option if they have the money to shell out. I have considered going raw but I live in an apartment in the city and we have a normal if not smallish refrigerator with a top freezer. I would be going to the store constantly. This just isnt possible for us.
So we feed Timberwolf and I feel great about it as a dog food. He loves it and is thriving and active.
Most people I know who arent doing raw are choosing kibble because it is more convenient – not because they think raw is dangerous or wrong. That being said, I think there are many very high grade kibbles out there so there is no need anymore to feel guilty for not doing raw IMO.
I feed three dogs every day, one has a raw diet (mine) one a mix of cooked meat, veg and rice diet, with occasional ‘dog’ foods and treats (Disabled owner) and the other ‘dog’ food.(Elderly lady) We all feel that as long as we are providing decent food it doesn’t matter who provides it. Butchers or Dog food companies, It’s still a business and I have to take the butchers word for it that his meat is good, as much as the others have to trust the companies that what ingredients they use are what they say it is!
Whatever the critics might say, the rise in popularity of raw-feeding would mean losses for the dog food companies, they couldn’t afford not to jump on the band wagon.
I think they are expensive and I don’t trust dog food companies anymore! I like to see what the meat is and I like the fortnightly or daily preparation of meals for my dogs and that time is saved anyway by not having to travel to the nearest pet shop. Luckily I only have to do the shopping for one dog!
I’m not anti raw, but I wouldn’t waste the money on buying pre-made raw… It’s WAY more expensive than doing it yourself… I only don’t feed raw because I have access to an excellent food, (solid gold BATM) and I’m lazy. I don’t cook my own food I’m not about to fix my dogs meals twice a day. Scooping is much easier, and I can manage their weight better, it’s easier to add/subtract cups than balancing out the raw… IMO but again, I’m lazy. Plus it would mean I have to go to the grocery store EW! If I decided to switch to raw though, I would do it myself. The pre-made stuff is really expensive.
Ilovetrofl: Not ALL the dog food companies are bad, if they make money so what, as long as they aren’t cutting corners and producing a quality food like the food I feed… I don’t care how much they make. The quality is worth it. And I don’t feel like I’m getting ripped off at all. You cant quantify how much better the ingredients in my dogs food are compared to the nasty foods, but it’s only 3 times the price. And I feed 4x less so it’s still cheaper to me.
I a big raw fan but I fed part raw and part high quality kibble because a travel to competitions a lot and I don’t always have access to refrigeration. I do kibble and chicken necks.
Anyway, I thought I’d take the easy way out and tried the BRAVO. Well, it was recalled soon after I bought it for possible sanonella and listeria contamination. Now, my puppy got very ill after eating it twice and my other dogs has issues on and off for weeks until I found out about the recall and stopped feeding it. he company swear it could not have been the food. I will never believe it. Never again. I’m back to high quality kibble and chicken necks that I know exactly where they have come from.
Animals eat raw food. That’s how they started way back when. All those dogs that I know on it have fewer health issues like cancer and other major diseases.
I’m actually pretty lazy, but I feed a whole prey model diet so I don’t mess with all that veggie pulping stuff that some people who do a Billinghurst/Pitcairn BARF style do. I just rotate on through what I’ve got on hand in the chest freezer (chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, goat, pork, bison, venison, duck, and several kinds of fish) and give green tripe and organ meats several times a week.
The pre-made dog foods are probably fine, but they are expensive. I prefer giving the slightly cheaper Innova EVO and Nature’s Variety Instinct 95% canned meats as supplements over the frozen stuff cause it’s easier when I’m traveling.
I would assume that they’re against those companies as well. It does not make sense, as few animals ever get sick from raw and the diets are perfectly fine–better by far than kibble or cans!
