Why Do Raw Feeders Refuse To Answer Q’s About Innova?

Ok, all raw feeders that I’ve encounter say, “if you don’t go raw, go innova” so why in the hell on a dog’s earth shouldn’t we go straight to innova? and I have still yet to hear the ill effects of feeding raw in am. innova in pm??? I challenge you!

Does anyone know if there have been any studies about using whole carcass rats rather then say rabbit as a meat source?
I was just curious as I was browsing around looking for snake food and wondered if anyone used rat carcass for raw feeding either cats or dogs.. Please include any links you have as I can’t find anything on the subject..
To anyone who’s anti-raw feeding-
I’ve already researched raw feeding and after comparing it to the crud that goes into commercial diets I think the small risk of my pet getting something like E. coli to be much less terrible then the kidney disease and urinary tract illnesses caused by commercial foods.. I personally eat plenty of raw meats without having ever caught any kind of illness from it.. I’d rather have my pet perhaps on rare occasion get a bit of diarrhea rather then die from mold toxins or melamine..

Raw Feeders Do You (stupid 20 Characters!)?

This is a question mainly for raw feeders, kibble feeders can answer but I’m not sure if it will apply to them.
Do you use flea and heartworm preventative? I’ve read some recent articles that say that neither one is really necessary, especially for raw feeders. The article said that heartworms have existed for a long time, but you never hear of mass amounts of wolves being killed from it, and that a dog that is fed raw has a good enough immune system to kill the heartworms without risk to the dog.
As for fleas, this did not come from a study but from some one who feeds raw. They said that flea medicine is practically poison and dangerous to the dog and not to use it. They used a special soap that is natural and keeps the fleas off without poison.
This all came from one of the naturally raised/raw feeding/no vaccination Yahoo groups that I’m on.
So, raw feeders do you use heartworm preventative or flea/tick medicine?

Calling All Raw Feeders!?

Hi, I’m a raw feeder too.
I was just wondering, what’s the most weird looking piece of meat you’ve ever fed your dog? I’m about to feed a beef tounge, and it will be the oddest looking piece of meat I’ve ever fed.
Oh, and one more question- Since what month/year have you been raw feeding? I’ve been doing raw since November 2008.

Any Raw Feeders Out There…?

I’m interested in raw feeding and I’ve done a bit of research: i was wondering if there were any raw feeders out there to answer a few questions i had….
1) What do you feed and where do you get it?
I saw stuff about chicken necks, back, wings… then more mention of beef and other stuff like fish. Sounds like a lot… Is there a site out there with a simple list of meats to feed? And where would i get some of the stuff?
2) How much to feed?
On the leerburg site they had an equation thing to tell how much to feed (or about how much) and it came out for me as feeding less than a pound of food (about .34-.51) to my dog (who is 17 lbs.) Is that correct?
3) How did you transition?
Again, on the leerburg site they said for a healthy adult you can go “cold turkey” and fast for a day then feed raw. Is that a good idea?
4) How much did it cost you compared to a high quality kibble?
I feed wellness ocean at $13/4lb bag, which is gone in less than a month. Would raw feeding be much more expensive?
5) Can you store stuff?
Like if i buy in bulk, can i mix a weeks worth and store it in a fridge or freezer? Or can i store the food itself and mix it by day?
6) What changes did you notice in your dog?
7) I know vets don’t like raw feeding, should i find one that DOES or should i just stay with the one i have (who is very nice, helpful… both of my dog go/went to him and he hasn’t led me astray yet?)
MUST i add supplements, and if so which ones?
The Leerburg site was VERY helpful but i wanted to hear from actual raw feeders. Maybe even see if anyone knew some good websites with easy to follow info and instructions.

Raw Feeders I Have A Question About…?

Ok so I started raw feeding about a 4 to 3 months ago and I have seen amazing changes, but i am stuck on what kind of mixtures of meats/organs I should give them. I usually go to Mexican town to get my meat but i have feed more chicken to them than anything else. I have feed them cow tongue, pork ribs, fish and chicken, and for organs i have feed them deer organs like heart, and Kidney, pork liver, chicken gizzards, liver, lungs, brain. So I want to mix it up at least twice a week with what kind of meat i give them so i would appreciate it if you could tell me what you feed your raw feed dogs, like what you feed her every week and where you buy it.
EX:
Monday: 1 pound of meat and bone with 6 oz of organs.
Tuesday: 2 pounds of meat & bone with 6 or 8 oz of organs.
Wednesday: 1pound of meat etc…
also what changes have you seen in your dogs from feeding them raw from, coat, weight, etc…
and if you could post a pic of your raw feed dogies
and any info on raw feeding you want to share is welcomed.
oh and no TD this is is a question and everyone is entitled to they own opinions, oh and star this question so that your Raw Feeding friends get a chance to share their knowledge.

I am a fan of raw feeding and I give both my dogs and cats raw meat when I can. I want to feed my future dogs completely raw. I read the answer to a question someone else posted. Is there any truth to what this person said? Can you clarify some of the points for me?
ANSWER:
For some reason owners believe that meat is good and that they are doing the best for their animal by feeding the “best steak” or “fresh liver” to their pet. Meat as part of a balanced diet is good, particularly for cats which are strict carnivores. It provides an excellent source of protein and other nutrients, but it must be mixed with other ingredients to create a properly balanced ration..
The reason is that meat and offal are deficient in calcium, and relatively high in phosphorus. As a result, if you feed an exclusively meat or offal diet your poor pet will have to maintain it’s blood calcium levels by removing calcium from it’s body stores. As you know, most of the body’s calcium reserves are in the bony part of the skeleton. So, your pet’s clever hormone system will remove calcium from the bone to keep the amount circulating in the bloodstream “normal”. The result is decalcification of the bone, which leads to thin, brittle bones. These bones can fracture very easily – even the act of walking can cause a fracture. Unless the dietary problem is corrected your veterinarian won’t even be able to repair the fractures because the bones won’t heal properly. Eventually, untreated animals will become totally debilitated, and possibly paralysed if the spine fractures .

One myth that could be threatening to our pets’ health involves raw meat diets for dogs. The proponents of this belief question the wholesomeness and nutritional value of commercial pet foods. But in fact there is no scientific substantiation for raw meat diets. Indeed, there are several known drawbacks:
Although meat is a source of protein, it has very low levels of calcium, a mineral our pets require for proper bone and tooth development. Calcium also plays an important role in blood clotting, muscle contraction and transmission of nerve impulses. But simply supplementing with calcium won’t work. Mineral nutrients are interrelated. Calcium and phosphorus have a scientifically established relationship in the formation of bones and teeth, provided a proper balance is maintained. This balance is usually not present in meat. If large quantities of raw meat are fed over time, skeletal problems may develop.
Liver is often thought of as a “healthy” meat because it has a high level of Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that is stored by the body. And for humans who eat other things as well, it can be healthy. But when liver is fed to pets in excessive quantities over a period of time, Vitamin A toxicity can result. This can lead to improper bone development, lameness and bone decalcification.
Raw meat carries the threat of bacteria and parasites, including salmonella. The risk of salmonellosis is always present when pets are fed raw meat diets. Certain species of tapeworm can be found in raw meat and passed on to a pet who ingests the meat.
Raw meat diets do not replicate the diets of dogs in the wild. While it’s true that dogs consume muscle meat when they eat wild animals for survival, they also consume the bones, intestinal contents and internal organs, which come closer to providing a complete and balanced diet. Wild dogs are also known to eat grasses and other vegetable matter.
The truth is that good quality pet foods are backed by years of canine nutrition studies. They are the result of scientific studies by researchers in veterinary colleges and animal nutritionists in Animal Science programs and at reputable pet food manufacturers. People often confuse a raw meat diet with an all meat diet based on the assumption that a dog natural raw diet is a meat only diet. The truth is a dog cannot survive on a diet of meat alone. They are omnivores and meat should form only a part of their overall diet, whether raw, proccessed or cooked. In the wild Canids eat not only the meat, but the bones(rich in calcium), the organs and stomach and intestines (including the contents) of their prey. the stomach and intestines content are mostly composed of vegetable and plant matter, as the wild dog kill is herbivorious.
