He will be 8 weeks old, when my other dog was a puppy it took him around 5 minutes before he had to go.

You might want to eat me after hearing this (Americans/Canadians anyhow) – we are currently feeding our puppy James WellBeLoved (actually you may not even have it over there..) well on the DogFoodAnalysis site it is a 3 star food.
It’s first 2 ingredients are: Rice, Turkey Meat Meal.
I’m a member of a Shih Tzu forum (mostly UK members) and they think that it is a good quality food. Over here we don’t have Canadian brands such as Orijen available (other than online) so most people feed either raw diet, JWB, Eukanuba, Royal Canin etc.
I enquired about raw feeding on the forum and a few people feed raw – ‘Natures Menu’ nuggets (link: http://www.naturesmenu.co.uk/products/fr…
I thought that raw was..feeding cuts of meat and a lot of effort but this is effortless, natural food in nugget form. Anyone in the UK had these (or US, wherever) and would you consider them a healthy diet for my Shih Tzu?

Either BARF model or Prey model can you do it?
I am NOT breeding at all!!!!!!
Just very curious what age you can start doing this.
(I assume from the age they start to wean but I also assume that there are special guidelines and such until they are a certain age)

Large/giant Breed Puppy Feeding?

I’ve heard that feeding large/giant breed puppies puppy food (even large breed puppy food) is bad for them because it causes them to grow too quickly, putting strain on their bones and joints.
I’ve also heard that feeding them grain-free diets or raw has the same effect and should not be done.
Basically, they should be fed an adult food right off the bat.
I personally believe that puppy food is a marketing gimmick to begin with and that, providing the adult food fed is a /high quality one/, it would do just as well. I don’t believe that there is any need for the so called ‘puppy foods’.
But, what I want to know is whether or not this information on large/giant breed puppies is true. No guesses… give me actual research, please.

But then I went through more of her articles. I was very disappointed to find articles against grain-free diets (for any dog), as well as articles saying raw feeding (for any dog) was not a good option. Worst of all, the only raw feeding she even seemed to be basing it all off of was the BARF diet (which isn’t even a very good raw feeding model to begin with).
It’s caused me to question her information as a whole.

Raw Diet + Vets! My Little Experiment + Some Thought Provoking Questions!?

Remember I said I’d be taking a couple of my dogs to 2 new in town vets and purposely leave out the fact they were raw fed until after I inquired about how they felt about a raw diet? WELL…Friday afternoon I did!
1st Vet: After waiting for a while because they couldn’t find me in the computer, I was invited back. The vet (who will remain nameless) couldn’t believe how good Itor looked for his age and commented on how “nice” of a dog he is…(yeah right). I asked about how he felt about a raw diet and he went on about a 15 minute tirade of how it’s deadly and nearly animal abuse and how my dogs could die of Salmonella or E. Coli if switched to a raw diet. I asked if he had ever treated dogs with Salmonella or E. Coli poisoning he said yes, one case of E. Coli which was fatal…the cause? The dog ate recalled DOG FOOD…way to drive home your point there doc! Then I dropped the bomb: “Well Itor was weaned on raw hamburger as a 4 week old puppy and has eaten raw ever since…”…his response “Well…if he’s doing good on it, and he seemingly is, I wouldn’t change anything”.
2nd Vet: This place was a little more laid back, not as Ritzy…had a homey feel, I liked it! We went back to the exam room and everything was what you’d expect, I got a multitude of compliments from the Techs and Vet on Hannibal and his boyish handsomeness and great looking coat and muscle tone and again on Itor’s niceness -chuckles under breath-. So at the end of the “Everything looks GREAT” examination, I asked about the raw diet!
This time I was told the same banter, E. Coli, Salmonella…I again asked if she had ever treated a dog with either ailment, she admitted no she had not. She did however recall a woman who shows Amstaffs in my city (I’ve heard of her). She switched to raw (didn’t know you were supposed to feed organ meats) and her dogs went downhill (duh) and she finally switched back to kibble. The vet then told me she had “Never seen a dog fed a raw diet that impressed” her. I then told her the dogs she’d just examined had been fed a raw diet since 4-8 weeks of age…her response was “Well I can’t say I’ve never seen a raw fed dog who didn’t impress me anymore!”.
Legit: For those of you who feed raw diets, what do your vets think? For those who do not, Monday, why don’t you call in and ask what your vets think about a properly fed raw diet (one with organ and bone fed)? I’m sure the answers will be hilarious! And lastly for those AGAINST raw feeding, are your reasons the same as these vets, are you worried most about e. coli/salmonella…or is there something else that bothers you? No TD’s from me, everybody is welcomed to answer!

Hey I am looking for people who feed their dogs raw diets. Do you have any good links? What type of things to do you feed your dogs? What are their fav things to eat? We are feeding eggs, chicken, rice and cheese once a day and dry food (canidae all life stages) once a day for the older dogs and twice a day for the puppy. We want to feed all raw but we need more information about it. So if you feed raw please let us know of some good sites and any other information you can give us. Thanks!

I kind of want to start my dog on a raw meat diet(I will make all the proper, slow introductions), and I’ve heard very different reviews. I most likely won’t feed him the raw meat diet for quite a few years(he’s three now, so it’ll probably be too late to try by then, but for future reference?). Any future puppy I get will be a husky, Akita, or any large dog like that. I’ll probably end up getting a mutt from the pound, though. Anyways, I was just wondering what your opinions are on this?
In my opinion, I think it’s perfectly fine. That’s what they ate when they were wild, isn’t it? And it’s been said by vets that it’s healthier. I’m not an expert on that, though XP

Puppy Is The Only One Who Is Having Diarrhea On Raw Diet?

Piper (aged 2.5 years) and Emmy (aged 4.5 months) have switched well- I switched Sunday night i believe? Little Lacey (age 11 weeks) the the only one having diarrhea… She started off with firm poop but in the past two days it has gotten looser and looser.
I know they say that if it’s loose to add more bone in the diet, but who arent my other dogs that way? They are getting the exact same thing, just in different quantities to match their weight.
