When someone hears the words “dog food,” they generally think of either dry pellets in a 30 lb bag or brown goo inside of a can. While commercial dog food lines the shelves of major retailers and pet supply stores, many pet owners are switching to a homemade diet for their dogs. Although there are many benefits to feeding your dog a holistic, “raw” food diet, many prepared meals are missing key nutrients and minerals. The addition of a canine nutritional supplement may prove to be a worthy addition to your pet’s diet.

It is easy for a dog owner to forget, neglect or simply ignore a crucial ingredient in the meals they prepare for their pets. This is a problem that may cause your pet to suffer from the effects of a nutritional imbalance, defeating the purpose of a wholesome, holistic diet. In addition, no meal can be guaranteed to have the proper amount of essential vitamins and minerals, as each piece of natural food is different. A canine food supplement would make sure your pet is getting everything he needs, especially when you go through the additional effort to make his meal instead of pouring it from a bag.

“I feed my dog a homemade diet because of the nutritional advantages, so why do I need a dog food supplement too?” This is a common question. Homemade dog food, although a source of many vitamins and minerals, simply cannot satisfy all necessary nutritional requirements found throughout a dog’s life. For example, a growing puppy should have small amounts of DHA and ALA fatty acids for proper retinal and brain development. A dog vitamin supplement containing these properties will ensure the pup is getting the additional resources he needs. Another example is a supplement that contains a blend of pro-biotic bacteria and minerals for dogs going through stressful situations such as pregnancy or breeding. Again, it is difficult to determine the actual nutritional breakdown of a homemade diet, but these small additions can make a world of difference.

Aside from regular canine nutritional supplements, show dog owners may want to improve their dog’s fur with a canine coat supplement or dog skin supplement. Although not vital for the average pet, these supplements may prove to enhance the health and appearance of a dog’s coat. A canine skin supplement will naturally prevent dry skin without the use of any medication and a coat supplement will ensure fur and hair have a proper balance of oils. Although these supplements may apply to specific applications, they still contain other health-enhancing vitamins and minerals that cannot be guaranteed in a homemade diet.

Although homemade dog food is being used more and more each day, it is important for pet owners to understand that these meals may not guarantee their pets are getting every vitamin and mineral they require. Canine food supplements can be added to any meal to ensure dog owners that their pets are getting everything they need. Additionally, animal supplements can be used in special applications such as pregnancy, post-birth, and puppyhood.

Dogs will eat just about anything they can lay their paws, er teeth on. So switching from the commercial brand of canine foodstuff with a healthier, raw food diet commonly goes smoothly. Occasionally, however, owners are reluctant to believe they are capable of supplying a healthful option for their canine buddies. They hedge their bets by mixing in commercial meal or by including multiple products.

Continuing to feed your dog commercial foodstuff along with uncooked can upset the gastrointestinal tract of some dogs resulting in diarrhea. Chemical additives inside commercial meal is in no way eliminated so the true advantages of a normal diet plan are certainly not really experienced. The dog is short changed. On the other hand, going natural but insisting on including a truck load of supplements into your dog’s weight loss plan this kind of as herbs, oils and nutritional vitamins may backfire. So many foreign ingredients can trigger the canine to refuse the new foodstuff or, if they do eat it, can also cause gastrointestinal issues.

Employing a range of meaty bone and vegetable resources signifies your dog’s weight loss plan will effortlessly balance as time passes. The top quality from the animals and vegetables you decide on is going to be impacted by their respective growing disorders. Animals raised in factory farming ailments are usually not allowed to take in what they’ve been obviously developed to take in, grass, but instead are force fed grain. This results inside a lack of omega 3 necessary fatty acids in their bodies. Crops grown on depleted but chemically fertilized soil have been shown to contain fewer nutrition than those grown in naturally rich soil. Two additional causes to decide on natural or tiny farm sources of foodstuff for yourself and your canine.

If you’re unable to locate very good top quality foodstuff sources you might determine to supplement. But do not supplement indiscriminately. Bones are rich in minerals. Unless the meaty bones you are acquiring are from your factory farm, including minerals to a raw, meaty bones eating habits is most likely unnecessary and possibly even harmful. Excessive calcium, for instance, can result in joint difficulties.

The most beneficial method is always to focus on variety. You’re going for balance over time and not in each meal. A canine from the wild would not pass up a dinner of fresh rabbit just mainly because he happened to have eaten one for breakfast. He takes benefit of what’s offered and in season. A lot more eggs from nesting birds in spring, more berries from the summer. You get the idea.

If you ever definitely feel your food resources are certainly not as very good as they could be take into account adding genuine food items such as eggs, cottage cheese, cod liver oil, kelp and alfalfa for your dog’s menu. And continue to look for better, natural if achievable, sources. Obviously derived vitamins and nutrition in natural entire foods will continually be additional satisfying and much healthier for you and your dog.

Boosting the immune system of your pet is important for biochemical reactions. The immune system is constantly protecting them from parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Boosting their immune system will help to overpower bacteria, destroy toxins, and kill viruses. In a weak immune system all those bad things lie toxins and bacteria can pass by the immune defending cells and create disorders. Disorders that can happen in your pets are fungi, yeast infections, eczema, ear infections, slowly healing wounds, food allergies, arthritis, and mange.
Not getting the proper nutrients is the main cause of immune system problems in dogs and cats. Thus, poor nutrition and continuously feeding the wrong food will weaken the immune system. When pets take medication or eat poisons their livers produce extra enzymes to detoxify them. So the reason a pet gets sick is that something is interfering with the bodies natural healing powers.
Sure Antibiotics can fight an infection but they are not affecting what weakened the immune system in the first place. Things like diet, stress, and exercise play an important role in determining whether a pet gets sick or stays healthy. Making sure that you play with them and take them for walks can keep them in shape.
Certain diets can make your pet vulnerable to diseases and sickness. Most pet are fed commercial foods that are filled with dyes, preservatives, and additives. Not to mention the chemicals that is put in the food as well. The artificial ingredients themselves can cause an immune response that can make a pet sick. The only time your pet can make enough antibodies is when it is healthy and well-fed. This does not mean over fed, which most pet owners are known to do as well.
A balanced level of minerals, vitamins, and nutrients is essential for boosting the immune system of your pet. Some things that you can do to boost the immune system of your pet is feed a raw food diet. The body of a dog or cat was designed to digest raw foods. They have been digesting raw meat and foods since they have been put on this earth. Since the domestication of dogs and cats we are now feeding them the crap in commercial dog foods. Now that you think about it same goes for us, our bodies aren’t made to digest preservatives, additives, and chemicals. Wild animals are not inundated with the disorders that affect our domesticated animals.
There are some natural dog foods that are out there that can be fed instead of a raw food diet as well. Adding a nutritional supplement to your pet’s diet can help too. It should contain things like vitamin C, Omega fatty acids, zinc, neem, and potassium and magnesium. Vitamin C is a great antiviral and antibacterial vitamin. Neem boost the production of T cells that defend the body when attacks on the immune system happen. Omega fatty acids promote good skin and coat health. Zinc can prevent infection and aide in healing wounds and develops white blood cells.
Alterative Health Supplements offers a variety of pet products that can increase the health of your pet. Immupet is great for boosting the immune system of your pet. It stimulates the heightened production of antibodies to fight for better health and stronger immunity for you pet. It will give them more energy and help them live a longer, healthier, happier life. It is a liver flavored chewable tablet that your pet can take everyday. It is recommended that one tablet is administered for every 25 pounds of weight.

This means that its behavior, health, habits and even appearance is directly proportional to what it eats. Thus, it is our responsibility to ensure that our dog eats healthy and we provide it with the best dog food. What is Best Dog Food? There is a lot of confusion over best dog food. Raw dog food or premium dog food is the holistic food? Should bones be provided to the dogs? It is quite unfortunate but most of the dog food companies are extracting money from us instead of providing dogs with wellbeing. So while determining dogs food that is best for their health, go for nutritious and balanced food.Natural Dog Food BenefitsWholesome food is the well balanced diet for your dog. The advantages of offering such a food to your dog will provide it with better skin, strong bones, muscle tone, bright eyes, healthy gums and teeth, better digestive system and a long and healthy life.Choices for Dog FoodThere are many options available for us right from dry dog food to natural dog food. We can broadly classify them in three parts: Commercial Dog Food, Raw Dog Food and Homemade Dog Food.Commercial Dog Food is indeed convenient and is value for money but that would not be true in long term. Unfortunately, they are not as healthy as we suppose them to be. They may not be killing our dogs but the nutritional benefits are nil in this case. These are sufficient to provide the dog with sufficient nutrients. But not all commercial dog foods are the same and that is our only relief. The natural dog food comprises of raw food. One such example of raw food is Billinghurst’s BARF raw food diet, which is quite popular. Steve’s Real Food for dogs and Primal Pet Foods is also quite in demand. It is believed that natural dog food is the best diet that one can feed their dogs. It is full of nutrition and being free from preservatives, chemicals and addictives, offers wholesome grains. Some of the raw food includes fruits and vegetables, bones, chicken, pork; meat etc. The advantage of feeding your dog with raw food is over all health factors including long life of the dog, healthy bones and good reproductive system.Homemade Food is another good solution to the question what dogs eat. The biggest advantage of using homemade food is that you know what ingredients you are using and also you have a clear idea about their health benefits. Secondly, since you are preparing it at home, you know that the surrounding where it has been made is clean and thus your dog’s health is not at stake. Thirdly, you can provide your dog with a balanced diet, taking care of its calories.Following the above-mentioned options, one can ensure that their dogs are healthy and well built.Copyright all rights reserved 2009 Puppy and Dog Obedience TrainingWhat do dogs eat may be a big question but the answer is not as complicated as we think. Thirdly, you can provide your dog with a balanced diet, taking care of its calories.Following the above-mentioned options, one can ensure that their dogs are healthy and well built.Copyright all rights reserved 2009 Puppy and Dog Obedience Training

There has been a lot of debate recently over what types of food are best for dogs, commercial food versus homemade food, raw food, cooked food, etc. There are advantages and disadvantages associated with all of these diets, and in this article, we will cover the views on the raw food diet for your dog, covering both sides of the issue, so that you can make your own decision. There are many benefits that your dog will receive from being on a raw diet, according to some vets. If you choose to allow your dog to have bones, then some say that their teeth will stay in better shape, and will be cleaner, than those on other diets. This could potentially mean less money that you have to spend on dental care at the vet’s office, which is considered to be an added bonus for you, the dog’s owner. Many dogs’ digestive systems are better able to tolerate raw food than commercial dog foods that are filled with by-products and preservatives. You also don’t have to worry as much about potential food allergies, since you know exactly what is in the food that you are giving to your dog.Another belief is that dogs that are on raw diets have significantly reduced risk of becoming obese, which can cause many serious health problems, just as it does for humans. They are only eating what they need, without getting all of the fillers that many commercial dog foods contain, which cuts out excess calories. One of the most common complaints that dog owners have about a raw diet is that it takes a lot longer for them to prepare their dog’s food than normal. They can’t just go to a bag and scoop out kibble into a bowl; they have to actually prepare the food, much as they would for themselves. You have to have enough meat on hand to feed your dog, you have to measure out the correct amount, and then mix it with the proper amount of vegetables, and bones if you choose to go that route. You have to determine how much food your dog should eat each day, depending on his or her ideal body weight, and then either prepare the food on a daily basis, or prepare it in batches and store it in the freezer until it is needed. Either way, you have a lot more time invested in the entire process, and for busy families, this isn’t always an option. When you purchase meat, depending on where you live, it can be pretty expensive, so you will likely have to spend more money on a raw diet than you would a commercial dog food diet. To make this option more affordable, you will need to look for sales and then buy as much as you can afford and store it appropriately, which could also mean investing in a separate freezer, if you don’t already have one on hand.Anytime you think about raw meat, you have to think about parasites and bacteria, which could be potentially harmful for your dog. Some meats are more dangerous than others, for example pork, but in general, you should be okay. Raw beef and chicken usually don’t pose any problems for dogs, as long as it is stored properly at the correct temperatures. You will need to decide whether or not to give your dog bones. Some vets say that you should never give your dog any kind of bone, because they could choke, or the bones could damage their digestive system, but others say as long as you are careful about the types of bones you give, this isn’t a problem. Many advocates of the raw diet grind bones up and mix them in, but again, that is your choice. If you are thinking about putting your dog on a raw diet, you need to take the time to look at all of the information you can find, and then make your own decision based on your findings. The raw diet requires a commitment from you the dog owner, both financially, and time-wise, if you aren’t prepared for that, or aren’t certain that is the way you want to go, then you might want to think about other options.

You know what really gets my goat?

Wastefulness.

I hate the thought of wasting time. I hate the thought of wasting energy. I even hate the thought of wasting food, which is actually one of the reasons I remained a binge eater for so long.

I love efficiency.

I love getting things done in a timely matter. I love only using as much as I need.

And I LOVE a low fat raw food diet.

Where am I going with all this?

I really don’t consider myself an environmentalist. I don’t petition for the polar bears and I don’t support the EPA.

I am currently taking a course on health and environmental justice and constantly feel at arms with my fellow classmates and their views on eco-responsibility.

And yet, I am the most environmentally conscious person I know!

Why?

Because I eat a raw food diet.

Cooking is NOT Environmentally Friendly

Because the topic has already been covered extensively, I’m not going to focus too much on meat and dairy consumption in regards to environmental efficacy. Suffice it to say that the livestock industry has a profound effect on the earth’s trees, topsoil, and water supply.

If you have any doubts that world-wide meat consumption is completely inefficient and has devastating consequences for our environment, be sure to check out the link below:

Eat To Save The Environment?

Let’s consider a cooked vegan diet that excludes, meat, dairy and eggs and typically includes lots of grains, soy and other processed products as well as fruits and vegetables.

Not only is this seen by many as the healthiest of all diets, it is viewed as the most environmentally friendly way to eat as well.

But is this true?

Here’s an example of some of the damaging effects of grains on the environment from Grain Damage: Rethinking the High-Starch Diet by none other than Dr. Douglas Graham:

Modern grain farming has resulted in the loss of almost all of our topsoil. What was sixteen feet of topsoil a century ago has been reduced to six inches or less on most of our farms.

And a little further on:

The following is a partial list of toxic chemicals used in the processing of grain. How much residue from these chemicals remains in the grain itself, versus how much is simply dumped in concentrated form onto our top soil is of little consequence. In either case, these chemicals end up polluting our bodies and the environment.

Mercury Cyanide Ammonium salts Chlorine

(Each of the above, in high enough doses, can cause insanity or even death).

Flourine Mineral oil Allum

(These are high-potency toxins).

And we all know how much cooked vegans love their soy! Here’s a quote from an article from 2004 on the effect of soy cultivation in Brazil:

Soy – at this moment – is the most important driver for deforestation, directly and indirectly,” says environmental analyst Jan Maarten Dros. “Directly because the cerrado is being converted from natural vegetation into soy fields. But indirectly, because in this region a lot of cattle farms are being replaced by soy farmers buying or renting land from cattle farmers.” This means, according to Dros’ 2003 WWF study on the impacts of soybean cultivation in Brazil, that the “cattle farmers tend to advance into new forest area, causing more deforestation.

*But that’s not all!*

Have you ever thought about all of the wasted materials that go into packaging these “environmentally responsible” foods?

Plastic, aluminum, steel, tin, cardboard, etc. are all used to contain prepared products such as oatmeal, granola, pasta, organic chips, gluten-free frozen foods, and the like.

*And we certainly cannot forget about cooking!*

All the heat used to bake, roast, grill, and steam vegetables.

All the water used to cook pasta, potatoes, rice etc.

By the way, do you know how much water it takes to boil a pound of pasta? 4-6 quarts.

That’s at least 1 GALLON of water!

The TRUE Green Goers

If you really want to be as efficient as possible, if you really want to go green, if you really want to do everything you can for Mother Earth, you can’t do much better than eating a healthy raw vegan diet.

The reasoning is quite simple.

The more whole, raw foods you consume, the less processed, packaged ingredients you buy and the less cooking methods you use. The less processed, packaged ingredients you buy and the less cooking methods you use means less wasted materials and a healthier planet (not to mention a healthier you).

When I compare the amount of material and energy waste before I went raw to after, the results are quite astonishing.

Sure, I was eating a vegan diet and consuming lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, but I was also consuming packaged products everyday, such as oatmeal, sprouted bread, prepared juices, tofu, and lots of dried herbs and spices packaged in plastic bags and containers.

Plus, I ate a whole lot of brown rice and pasta that had to be boiled and a good amount of steamed and baked vegetables.

On the contrary, the foods that I consume now – fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds – require very little to no packaging at all. In fact, my first two meals of bananas is just that…bananas!

No plastic wrap, no cardboard containers, no twisty ties, etc. Just banana peels that can easily be composted for a lovely, eco-friendly home garden.

And all of this doesn’t even begin to consider the fact that I am no longer supporting destructive agricultural methods, while at the same time encouraging the growth of environmentally AND ecologically friendly fruit trees.

According to The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation:

Fruit trees heal the environment by cleaning the air, improving soil quality, preventing erosion, creating animal habitat, sustaining valuable water sources, and providing healthy nutrition.

And here’s another one from Grain Damage:

During the great floods of 1993, for example, millions of acres of grain crops were destroyed in the United States, while tree crops flourished. Whereas grains crops lead to depletions and loss of precious topsoil, orchards pull their water and nutrients from deep down in the subsoil, assist in the building of topsoil, and aid in nutrient recycling.

Fruit and nut trees are durable, they protect the soil from erosion, and they encourage biodiversity.

Trees also act as grand air filters, causing particulate matter to fall to the ground. As we replace fields of grains with orchards, we can expect our air to become cleaner, sweeter, and healthier for us.

Food for Thought

Here’s one last little bit of info from my main-man, Dr. D.

An acre of orchard will feed 250% more people than an acre of grain.

How’s that for efficiency?

Right now kitty is on Hills ID prescription food. She seems better on this food, but they say it should only be fed short term & she’s been on it 3 mos. Also, it contains a lot of bad ingredient including corn gluten & chicken bi-products YUK My vet doesn’t seem at all knowledgeable about food. I’m planning on going to a holistic vet, but wanted to get input from members who feed the raw food diet. Thanks!

I have a 3 year old Bichon Frise that I just started on a raw food diet. I was feeding dehydrated raw but decided to go fresh since last week. My dog is eating a raw bone right now. It’s a neck bone. I hear him crunching but am wondering what do I look out for to make sure he is safe? It’s okay that he’s breaking off peices and crunching them? It’s so weird to me.
Thanks for your help!!
