Remember I said I’d be taking a couple of my dogs to 2 new in town vets and purposely leave out the fact they were raw fed until after I inquired about how they felt about a raw diet? WELL…Friday afternoon I did!
1st Vet: After waiting for a while because they couldn’t find me in the computer, I was invited back. The vet (who will remain nameless) couldn’t believe how good Itor looked for his age and commented on how “nice” of a dog he is…(yeah right). I asked about how he felt about a raw diet and he went on about a 15 minute tirade of how it’s deadly and nearly animal abuse and how my dogs could die of Salmonella or E. Coli if switched to a raw diet. I asked if he had ever treated dogs with Salmonella or E. Coli poisoning he said yes, one case of E. Coli which was fatal…the cause? The dog ate recalled DOG FOOD…way to drive home your point there doc! Then I dropped the bomb: “Well Itor was weaned on raw hamburger as a 4 week old puppy and has eaten raw ever since…”…his response “Well…if he’s doing good on it, and he seemingly is, I wouldn’t change anything”.
2nd Vet: This place was a little more laid back, not as Ritzy…had a homey feel, I liked it! We went back to the exam room and everything was what you’d expect, I got a multitude of compliments from the Techs and Vet on Hannibal and his boyish handsomeness and great looking coat and muscle tone and again on Itor’s niceness -chuckles under breath-. So at the end of the “Everything looks GREAT” examination, I asked about the raw diet!
This time I was told the same banter, E. Coli, Salmonella…I again asked if she had ever treated a dog with either ailment, she admitted no she had not. She did however recall a woman who shows Amstaffs in my city (I’ve heard of her). She switched to raw (didn’t know you were supposed to feed organ meats) and her dogs went downhill (duh) and she finally switched back to kibble. The vet then told me she had “Never seen a dog fed a raw diet that impressed” her. I then told her the dogs she’d just examined had been fed a raw diet since 4-8 weeks of age…her response was “Well I can’t say I’ve never seen a raw fed dog who didn’t impress me anymore!”.
Legit: For those of you who feed raw diets, what do your vets think? For those who do not, Monday, why don’t you call in and ask what your vets think about a properly fed raw diet (one with organ and bone fed)? I’m sure the answers will be hilarious! And lastly for those AGAINST raw feeding, are your reasons the same as these vets, are you worried most about e. coli/salmonella…or is there something else that bothers you? No TD’s from me, everybody is welcomed to answer!

My son has several large breed dogs, and the only raw animal parts that are given to them would be bones. The local vet has agreed that cooked bones are more likely to choke a dog. Eating raw flesh is not recommended for our “wolf-cousins”. Truly, if they were on their own in the woods, they would survive by eating small wild animals. The house cat even enjoys an occasional mouse. You risk intestinal problems from germs or parasites found in raw meats. Love your dogs with well cooked meats, grains, and an assortment of vegetables. They really love what we eat! Good Luck!

I have 2 dachshunds, a boy & a girl. They both just turned a year last month. They are super healthy and are very active dogs.
Since I got both of them, I put them on some great high quality dry dog food. I have them on “Wellness”. They love it, but they are deffinetly not picky eaters, they will eat absolutely anything I put in front of them. I also give them a vitamin, every other day that has minerals, vitamins and things they may not get in the food (which my vet has said is fine, but I should give them once every other day because “Wellness” is such a nutrient packed food).
ANYWAYS my question is this. I have read on Y/A about Raw feeding. And it seems like there is quite the debate on whethere dry food or Raw feeding is better. And truthfully I have not a clue.
I want the best for my dogs, and I want them to live a long, happy, healthy life.
I want to understand what you feed to your dogs when you are RAW feeding? How much it costs (weekly, monthly etc)? Is it really that beneficial to the dog?
Oh and if it matters my little girl (Kahlua) is about 12 lbs & my little boy (Kona) is about 14 lbs.
Thank you!

I have a 3 pound chihuahua and he is really skinny. He seems to eat a lot but never gains any weight. I have taken him to the vet and had blood work done and hes also regularly dewormed. Right now he’s eating percription hills dental diet dog food mixed with the wet percription hills J/D dog food. I also feed him sardines and tune or salmon a few times a week because his stool is sometimes very dry. I’ve been doing some research and seen some menus saying He should eat 2-3% of his ideal body weight which is confusing I’m not really sure how much that is or which foods to feed him. If someone could give me a weekly menu with amounts to feed him I would be very greatful as its getting colder out and he need a little body fat. Thank you all so much for your time.

Hello all – I have a 12 week old female american bulldog and I don’t know how much food I should be giving her a day?
When I got her she was being feed Puppy chow and over the couse of a week to two I switched her to Avodurm because my vet told me to – stupid! I wanted to feed her raw from the beginning so when I transitioned her food to Avodurm I was also adding some raw. After a week or two I have taken her completely off of the kibble and now she just has raw. I have been starving her I think-so any help on how much a fast growing large breed pup should be feed would be greatly apperciated!
I’m also wondering about fruits and veggies? My vet said that it was okay to give them to her. So the last couple of days I have given her some carrots or zucchine, and an apple or banana with the raw meat? Is that okay?
One more ? – I’m also concerned about her stools-they have been very small and hard-I can’t get her to drink more.
This is my first pet – please help! Thanks – Brandy
